Alyiakal, overcaptain in the Mirror Lancers of Cyador, has completed his tour of duty as officer-in-charge of a small, remote post. He just wants to finish and see his best friend consorted and assume his next post assignment. If only it were that easy.
He discovers corruption in the Merchanter Clans of Cyador, but investigating Mirror Lancer officers end up dead. Before he can go on leave, he has to replace one of these officers, close a post, dodge an attempt on his life, and an investigation from Magi-i.

Amazing as always!
When I can actually feel the anxiety of getting reposted simply from a story and narrator, LE Modesitt, Jr and Kirby Heyborne are my favorite of an all the master storytelling teams.

As is usual, I enjoy the writing of LE Modesitt, Jr.
Some of the pronunciation is that of the UK and not of the US. It could be problematic for some listeners.

Another great story.
I always enjoy the Recluse tales. Although they build on a different aspect of the Recluse saga so each book could stand on its own

Advances the storyline but mediocre story in and of itself.
Long time fan. I have purchased all of the series and loved most of them. Unfortunately, this is one of the few that left me wanting. Without posting details this is a pleasant read, but seriously underwhelming. Would make a great first section of a great book but as a stand alone...fails to meet expectations.

Was pretty average compared to his previous books
