About this listen

Our Island Story, originally published in 1905 and later updated, details the history of Britain up to World War I (including some myths and legends associated with British history). Author H. E. Marshall based the book on her answers to her children's questions about the history of their "home island" (Great Britain). This volume covers the earliest historical period.

Critic reviews

“I was given H.E. Marshall’s Our Island Story at Christmas 1936 and I’ve still got that copy. It was a direct inspiration for me in my career as a historian.” (Antonia Fraser)

good for children under 10; not for adults

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No. I was hoping for essentially a brief history. It is that but the content and tone are geared for children. The publisher notes that the author was inspired by her children's questions but it should note that the book was written to not only address those questions but to explicitly address them for children. The book was originally written in 1905 and it is interesting to hear for how very differently ideas and concepts were presented, with a good deal of patriotism spiced with pride that is lacking in much of today's works. However, it does get a bit tedious after a while. As an historical oddment, for nostalgia, or for children, this book is all right, but otherwise, better to give it a miss.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

the male voice is a bit oily

Wrong narrator...knock off

This is not David Thorne. Someone stole the photo of the REAL David Thorne cover, and replaced the audio. Subpar.
