Communication, understanding, and support

Charlene Collins has cut apart, dissected, and studied the intricate world of the most punk-rock sounding behavioral system known to humankind: opposition defiant disorder. Seriously, it sounds like an epic, mohawk-adorned band that cares not for societies’ “suits” and “squares.” However, the truth is that this is a symptom-based disorder that is actually able to be diagnosed and contains within it a very many traits that are not a walk in the park for parents by any means. My favorite thing about this title is that Collins (author) has really included a focus on self care when it comes to parenting these kinds of things and lays out a compassionate approach to not just coping, but thriving as a parent, with tools that bring about betterment in communication, understanding, and support.

The explanation of symptoms and diagnosis helped me understand this behavior on a deeper level, which made me feel more equipped to address it. The real-life success stories were especially encouraging, showing that meaningful change is possible even in the toughest situations.
