About this listen

Whether dueling with new forensics or the local old boys' network, irreverent defense attorney Andy Carpenter always leaves them awed with his biting wit and winning fourth-quarter game plan.

But the fun stops the day Andy's dad, Paterson, New Jersey's legendary ex-DA, drops dead in front of him at a game in Yankee Stadium. The shocks pile on as he discovers his dad left him with two unexpected legacies: a fortune of $22 million that Andy never knew existed...and a murder case with enough racial tinder to burn down City Hall.

Struggling to serve justice and bring honor to his father, Andy must dig up some explosive political skeletons - and an astonishing family secret that can close his case (and his mouth) for good.

Good to read 1st book in series

I am glad the first works of this series has been added. I have really enjoyed all the Andy Carpenter stories and it is great to get the 1st one to fill in some background. The narrator has just the right voice for this story, just enough deadpan for the smart a-- Andy.

Surprisingly Good

If you could sum up Open and Shut in three words, what would they be?

comedy curiosity mystery

Who was your favorite character and why?

That crazy, curious lawyer. Several times I wanted to smack his smart-ass mouth right off his face & tell him to shut up. But he was a curious sort & just kept on picking at things like a good Shamus should. In the end, he was still a Legal Beagle with a smart mouth but was saved by the love of a dog & the right girl.

What about Grover Gardner’s performance did you like?

He had just the right attitude & tone of voice for a smart ass Shamus.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Nope. Good fun but nothing Earth Shattering. More of a Maltese Falcon style of tale. But sometimes that's all you need.

Any additional comments?

I'd listen to other books by this author.

compelling and hilarious

Storyline believable and perfect person to narrate. If you don't appreciate sarcasm this book won't be good for you. Kept me laughing throughout most of the book but still a great thriller. Can't wait to read the next book by Mr. Risenfelt.

Good -- not great -- but good

I enjoyed this book - a *little* predictable is my only complaint. Well read and entertaining. Worth the money.

What's not to love?

I am so happy I stumbled across this author, I thoroughly enjoy everything about him, the characters, the narrator and most of all the humor in the storytelling. I'm so glad there are more in this series.

A great read!

murder-investigation, law-enforcement, lawyers, snarky, verbal-humor

Reads like the 2018 SCOTUS incident gone extremely and horribly wrong. Add in problems with recently ex wife, a client who was railroaded seven years prior and currently on death row, and Andy's other personal crises and you have everything about the book except Andy's incorrigible snarkiness. This is a very good read!

Reminiscent of early mystery radio.

The storytelling format did not enhance the book. I did not like the
Peppering of profanity throughout. Just not my kind of mystery.
