About this listen

Don’t miss the new, devastatingly good thriller from Helen Fields, The Institution. Out now!

One for sorrow, two for joy
Edinburgh is gripped by the greatest terror it has ever known: a lone bomber is targeting victims across the city, and no one is safe.

Three for a girl, four for a boy
In their jobs, DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach deal with death every day. But when it becomes clear that every bomb is a trap designed to kill them too, the possibility of facing it themselves starts to feel all too real.

Five for silver, six for gold
With the body count rising daily and the bomber’s methods becoming ever more horrifying, Ava and Luc must race to find out who is behind the attacks – or pay the ultimate price…

Seven for a secret never to be told…

With twists and turns you’ll never see coming, prepare to be gripped by this devastatingly good thriller. Perfect for fans of Stuart MacBride and MJ Arlidge.

Another Excellent Listen!

As per usual, Ms. Fields writes an engrossing Scottish police procedural and crime thriller. DI Callanach and DCI Ava Turner lead a group enjoyable characters through criminal cases in Edinburgh. Mr. Laing employs a listenable Scottish brogue and narrates beautifully. Highly recommended!

One of the very best!

I could not stop listening. I love the characters and how each plot is tied off. If the next book was available now I would be listening to it now instead of writing this review!

Brilliantly written but so sad.

Wow. This is one of my favorite series and each book has been expertly crafted and held my attention throughout. This one hooked me in from the beginning but as the twists became turns, I listened in stunned silence. If you love a good mystery, you won’t be disappointed but this one will stay with you long after you’ve finished.

I’m Crushed…

Truly, I do not know what to say. This has been one of the best series I have listened to in a long while and can not reconcile how it all came to a close. The author wrote a group of wonderful novels that made up this series and it is highly recommended. Still, I wish that it hadn’t ended as it did. Nothing like a bit of realism thrown into my fiction!
I hope that this isn’t the end, but it (sadly) makes sense if it is.

Great work by the narrator, Robin Laing. I hope to listen to many more books with his amazing voice. Much thanks to Helen Fields for creating such wonderfully authentic characters, and for creating not only a remarkable, fast paced and believable police procedural, but also one that leaves the reader wanting more and doling out an abundance of food for thought about life and living it. Brava.

Helen...you're a jerk

Amazing book as usual. Incredible really. Its the kind of book you can't stop listening to and keeps you constantly guessing and engaged. That being said the title of this review is accurate and I applaude Helen for making such a damn good and painful book.

Fantastic Narrator and Brilliant, Entertaining and Surprising Storyline

I've been a reader/listener to the DI Callenach series of books since I first stumbled upon them, and this one absolutely does not disappoint. Robin Laing is brilliant, as always, and brings every character to life in exactly the way I always hope for when listening to an audio book -- they are each distinctive, and each has their own accent, as appropriate; but they are not simply characatures with silly voices (I will never forget fearing -- unnecessarily, thank goodness! -- upon listening to 'Perfect Remains' for the first time, that DI Callenach would come across as sounding like Savoir Faire from the 'Klondike Kat' cartoons).
I will admit that my absolute favorite takeaway from this installment is the character of Dr. Connie Woolwine, the profiler; I recall thinking after her appearance in the story, that I hoped Helen Fields would do more with Dr. Woolwine in future, as she was so wonderfully sculpted and brilliant. Needless to say, I am now off to purchase a copy of Fields' 'The Institution.'
'One for Sorrow' is brilliant, fast-paced, heart-rending, surprising, and more than worth the credit/purchase price.
