About this listen

An instant New York Times best seller!

“Rapinoe's 'signature pose' from the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup is synonymous to the feeling we got when finishing this book: heart full, arms wide and ready to take up space in this world.” (USA Today)

Megan Rapinoe, Olympic gold medalist and two-time Women's World Cup champion, reveals for the first time her life both on and off the field. Guided by her personal journey into social justice, brimming with humor, humanity, and joy, she urges all of us to ask ourselves, What will you do with your one life?

Only four years old when she kicked her first soccer ball, Megan Rapinoe developed a love - and clear talent - for the game at a young age. But it was her parents who taught her that winning was much less important than how she lived her life. From childhood on, Rapinoe always did what she could to stand up for what was right - even if it meant going up against people who disagreed.

In One Life, Megan Rapinoe invites readers on a remarkable journey, looking back on both her victories and her failures, and pulls back the curtain on events we know only from the headlines. After the 2011 World Cup, discouraged by how few athletes were open about their sexuality, Rapinoe decided to come out publicly as gay and use her platform to advocate for marriage equality. Recognizing the power she had to bring attention to critical issues, in 2016 she took a knee during the national anthem in solidarity with former NFL player Colin Kaepernick to protest racial injustice and police brutality - the first high-profile white athlete to do so. The backlash was immediate, but it couldn’t compare to the overwhelming support. Rapinoe became a force of change.

Here for the first time, Rapinoe reflects upon some of the most pivotal moments in her life and career - from her realization in college that she was gay, through the disputes with soccer coaches and officials over her decision to kneel, to the first time she met her now-fiancé WNBA champion Sue Bird, and up through suing the US Soccer Federation over gender discrimination and equal pay. Throughout, Rapinoe makes clear the obligation we all have to speak up, and the impact each of us can have on our communities. Deeply personal and inspiring, One Life reveals that real, concrete change lies within all of us, and asks: If we all have the same resource - this one precious life, made up of the decisions we make every day - what are you going to do?

"One Life makes it clear that Rapinoe’s greatest accomplishments may ultimately come away from the soccer pitch. She’s a new kind of American hero." (San Francisco Chronicle)

Very Enjoyable read!

I finished this listen in 5 days. Found it to be entertaining, informative and a lovely peak into her life, both personal and soccer. She caused me to laugh out loud on multiple occasions, to feel angry at some of the injustices and over all have all the "feels" that make me want to keep reading. I am so excited that this is going to be made into TV! Way to go!

Just. Wow.

I loved every minute and second of this woman’s story. Her courage and strength (as well as her love of swearing) are inspiring. She is so human. I hope she’ll continue to help us be better. Allow us to reflect on our own whiteness and know that we too, want more for others. Let’s go!

Absolutely Worth The Listen

I preordered the minute I heard that Megan would be publishing this book. Speaking from all aspects of her life both professional and personal it shows the strong values and views she shares for not only herself but for the rights of others. There was already respect for you Megan Rapinoe but it increased tenfold after listening to your book. Thank you for being inspiration. 💚🇯🇲

So much more than a soccer player

I’ve been a fan of Megan’s since her glorious cross to Abby Wambach in the 2011 World Cup Quarterfinal agains Brazil (which she describes beautifully in this book) and I’ve never looked back. I’ve always supported her and everything she stands for.

This book went far beyond what I expected and pulled back the layers of this soccer icon to reveal a complex individual who deserves every bit of recognition she has earned, and then some.

Megan has always inspired me. As the first “out” soccer player she broke down barriers and inspired the queer community. As the first major athlete to follow Colin Kaepernick’s example and kneel during the national anthem she brought attention to injustices and nearly lost her career but refused to give up.

She shares her stories of struggle and triumph which such candid honesty that you wonder how she could be such a public figure and be so honest.

As a soccer fan, I re-lived my favorite moments through her descriptions and insight. I remembered where I was, what I was doing, and my emotions in those moments.. it gave me chills all over again.

As a person, I connected to her on a deeper level and felt inspired by her actions. She is right, you can’t do damage control for something when you know it’s the right thing to do. You can’t stop yourself in those moments.

I have never felt so seen. This book brought me to tears, made me laugh, rejuvenated my sense of activism and justice and most importantly made me proud to be a USWNT fan.

Great Powerful Woman!

Love your book! It is not surprising that you were blacklisted for standing up for what you belive matters. While every white person I know would give a nod to the fact that the issues DO exist, none of them would break from "their own" in order to make a statement. I made a.person promise to.myself that when I saw racism, I would speak up. And I have... Living in the.midwest this happens more than you'd imagine. "Please don't say that, it makes me uncomfortable" is my response to use of the N word. It's always followed by an excuse.for why THEY say it thats not racist. I just blow that off or communicate how I, .raised by racist, have to consciously be proactive to combat racism.in my own daily life. It's not OK to be racist. But it's also not okay to continue tto allow racism in our daily.lives. So happy for you! Keep up.the great work!

Moving

It’s always a blessing to be invited into someone’s life. Pinoe shares intimate parts of her life as well as her decision making process (a lot of things make sense now from the outside looking in). I’m grateful to know her better. Always a fan!!!

inspiring!

couldn't put it down. finished in a day! I love her honest look at herself and admitting when she may have been not quite right. we need more of our heroes to show they're not perfect either.
But she is about as perfect as one can truly be!
