About this listen

Number-one New York Times best-selling author Laurell K. Hamilton offers a sexy, suspenseful novel of human - and inhuman - passions, as vampire hunter Anita Blake must repay a favor to a man almost as dangerous as the ancient evil she's about to face....

Edward is a hit man, specializing in monsters, vampires, shapeshifters, anything and everything. There are people like Anita who do it legal, but Edward doesn't sweat the legalities, or, hell, the ethics. He's an equal opportunity killer. Anita may be one of the few friends that Edward has, but it’s like being friends with a tame leopard. It may curl up on the foot of your bed and let you pet its head, but it can still eat your throat out....

Please note: This is an abridged edition. An unabridged version is also available.

Critic reviews

"Anita's usual supporting cast is missing, and she's taking time out from her complex love life, but there's plenty of bloody action, vampires, werewolves, and Aztec ritual. Plus a lot more about Edward. Fans will find this installment similar to the earlier books in the series, particularly The Laughing Corpse." (Amazon.com review)

"[A] monstrously entertaining read." (Publishers Weekly)

Absolutely disappointed

I wish I would have noticed this was an abridged version. Over half the book is missing. I want my money back. Especially, since I went ahead, found the full version and purchased that one as well.

Something is missing...

I am in the process of re-reading the Anita Blake series. Its my favorite. This book is a favorite of ine from the series because it gives you a glimpse into Edward's life and shows Anita eithout the boys. but i noticed that some of the book was missing. what happened to the rest at the end? And i feel like some of the book was missing in the middle. Whats up with that?

Pleasantly surprised.

I wasn't sure how I felt about Kimberly Alexis' narration in the beginning, but she definitely grew on me. Now I've moved on to Narcissus in Chains with Cynthia Holloway, and I find myself missing Kimberly...

Missing big chunks of book

The book and performance of the narrator is very good, but they abridge too much. Definitely alters the story line to have that much cut out.

Audio version has left out parts of the book!

I love this book but the audio version left out a TON of the story at the end. This was highly frustrating. I would advise those that have never read the actual book to do so instead of buying the audio version so you don't miss some very important parts of the story.

Anita Blake Rocks!

a great book in a awesome series. what I love about the Anita Blake series is that as it progresses you have character growth and development with each new book. unlike some series that are almost static and stagnant where the characters are concerned. I just wish the next book in the series(Nacissus in Chains), was available on audio and unabridged. It's the pivotal book in the series. this book is a great addition to the series.

. LKH is an in depth writer, from book 1 on!

If you could sum up Obsidian Butterfly in three words, what would they be?

Wonderful character details

Who was your favorite character and why?

Anita of course. She's slowly learning the definition of what she is, and who it makes her.

Which character – as performed by Kimberly Alexis – was your favorite?

In Obsidian Butterfly it has to be Ted/Edward, switching to and fro was easy to follow.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely, woke up in the morning, worked around the house. Listened on the way to and from work. Then finished by bed time.

Hate Abridged version

I have been reading this series and this is the first book that is in the abridged format. It just kind of ended without any closure. The next one in the series is also an abridged version... why is that, all other books are unabridge.
