Nothing Else but Miracles

Twelve-year-old Dory Byrne lives with her brothers on New York City's Lower East Side, waiting impatiently through the darkest hours of World War II for her pop to come home from fighting Hitler. Legally speaking, Dory's brother, Fish, isn't old enough to be in charge of Dory and her younger brother, Pike, but the neighborhood knows the score and, like Pop always says, "the neighborhood will give you what you need."

There's the lady from the bakery, who saves them leftover crullers. The kind landlord who checks in on them. And every Thursday night, the Byrnes enjoy a free bowl of seafood stew at Mr. Caputo's restaurant. Which is where Dory learns about the hand-pulled elevator that is the only way to get to Caputo's upper floors. The elevator that's so creaky and ancient, nobody's been in it for decades.

Until now.

The Byrnes' landlord dies unexpectedly and the new one is anything but kind. When he catches on about Pop being gone, he turns the Byrnes in, hoping they'll be shipped off to an orphanage. Dory and her brothers need a hideout, and suddenly the elevator and the abandoned hotel it leads to provide just the solution they need.

Loved this book so much!

Such a wonderful feel good story! A whole new look at “Love thy neighbor”. The narrator was amazing as well.

A good solid story about wartime children and the community they can count on.

The characters were real and relatable! The closeness of their family and community made me laugh and made me cry. A worthwhile story!

Refreshingly positive

I love the author and narrator. Great adventure whether you’re 8 or 80. I highly recommend this book.

I didn't really like how Dory, Pike, and Fish didn't find the diamond earring. But I really overall did love this story!🙂

Heart warming

I think that this book was a good read but probably geared towards the teenager, young adult genre.

Recommend

This is a charming and entertaining story, well narrated. I read some of the less than stellar reviews comparing it to A Place to Hang the Moon, which I think is unfair. Yes, A Place to Hang is a wonderful book. But that does not and should not take anything away from Nothing Else But Miracles which is a very good work in and of itself. Kate Albus is an excellent writer with intriguing story lines and interesting, like-able characters. Anyone who loved A Place to Hang the Moon will enjoy this book as well. I look forward to Kate Albus’ next book.

Realization of family

This book set a good story that just kept getting better. A story of three children; each maturing because of the hardship of war , the bonds that develop, and the neighborhood that quietly watches over them.

Worth the wait.

When I started this book, I really didn't think I would like it, or that I would finish it. But once past the third or fourth chapter, I was drawn into the story, and couldn't wait to hear what happened next.

Disappointing

It was an "ok" story. It was not nearly as good as "A Place to Hang the Moon".

Not as good as a place to hang the moon.

Though it is a sweet and heartfelt story, it’s sadly not as good as A Place to Hang the Moon. I did enjoy it though, and would recommend.
