About this listen

Immediately after the death of the aunt who raised her, Joyce Radway's cousins treat her like a servant. They even attempt to block her from taking exams to qualify as a teacher and earn her own living. Angered by their constant demands, she impulsively grabs her hat and purse and runs to her aunt's grave to weep and rest. But she's not alone; thieves are using the cemetery to hide stolen goods, and she's heartsick to discover their leader is a man she once knew and admired. They spot each other and she runs from him, only knowing she must get away as far as possible and begin a new life.

Starting fresh with limited funds isn't easy and Joyce, bolstered by the Bible verses she's memorized since childhood, begins by asking God to protect her. Her Lord does provide, but Joyce's many skills are put to the test as she finds shelter, hand-sews new clothes, and even builds furniture. She strives to create new job opportunities and friendships. Meanwhile her old friends wonder what has happened to her, as her relatives' lies about her whereabouts are revealed.

The bible is Joyce's guide through life, and most of her prayers are for her old friend who has been breaking the laws of man and God. Their encounter at the cemetery haunts her. It haunts him, too. But as he searches for her and to find meaning in his life, his old gang plots to make him pay for deserting them.

A Christian Cinderella Story

Not Under the Law can be enjoyed as a charming example of a Christian walk. We go through difficulties and persist in faith during times of persecution. The world comes at us hard and we slave like Cinderella did! In the end, believers always triumph! One of my top ten Grace Livingston Hill books.

Love this book by Grace Livingston Hill- another fantastic story and well narrated!

Love the characters, especially Kerry, and her standing up to her abusive relatives, then her resourcefulness in starting out on her own with very little and trusting God to survive.

The writter that helped be along in my struggles.

I love all of Mrs. Hills books .She will always be the top Christian writer of all times. I own 124 of her books. Since my eyes are poor I want to listen to all her books one last time.

Great Story Development

For a story with lots of narrative it was a pleasant listen. Anne Hancock did a great job varying her voice to identify the different characters. The story had lots of head hopping, something I am not used to but it was done so well I appreciated the different points of view, even from the very minor characters. The richness of Christian faith shared throughout the story was encouraging to my own journey as a Christian author. 😊

Young, very mature believer

This is a good example of adulthood, very mature believer that strives to obey God‘s word literally moment by moment day by day this is the first one I’ve read I’ve heard that covers this angle. It’s wonderful to see how to be OK with the angry words and the half truths of the hateful people who are in her life.

Eh

Some great aspects and GLH qualities, but long, and drawn out. Good mystery and gasp moments, but not written to keep the reader actively engaged. I had to keep rewinding because I would stop paying attention. I kept thinking of ways it could be written better. But, you know, GLH. I wished the romance angle was written better. I found the ending totally unbelievable and unsatisfactory. I kept waiting for the details about the two main characters, but it never really came together, and then we’re just supposed to believe that they end up together.
