About this listen

Who will you cross to protect your own?

When Hannah packs up her past and moves to the cottage next-door to her sister, she hopes the luxe neighborhood and close family ties will be the perfect escape for her son and the shadows that trail them. But when a young girl goes missing days after they unload their final boxes and her son is quickly thrown under suspicion, Hannah must do whatever it takes to protect her child.

Even if that means pointing the blame her sister's way instead.

With investigators swarming and neighborhood scrutiny closing in, the divide between two sisters grows. As one fiercely defends her husband, the other shields her boy from the crime, keeping quiet the secrets that might unravel it all. And all the while, one young girl has vanished, and someone is to blame.

Unpredictable ending, thrilling to the end!

The family chemistry was real between sisters and the mother. I'm really glad they explained Mile's thought process at the end which was important for full closure.

Disjointed

Characters reached conclusions out of the blue - not enough foreshadowing to make conclusions believable; disjointed

All the roses to the narrator

I’ve never had the absolute pleasure of hearing Suzan Toren but her performance here was fantastic, great rich soothing voice. I could hear her read the ingredients on a cereal box and be entertained. The story was nice but I felt that the ending was a tad rushed and collected together at the last minute. Surprising takes on child rearing and the differences between raising sons and daughters.

It was weird but really good

I love the mom she would always put a smile on my face when she comes on
Story was to the point not much going around in the characters head (all the could have and should have, can’t stand those stories) the story flowed as it should.

Phenomenal!

As always, exquisite writing from Simmons.
Great story (won't give it away...) but LOVE the use of two narrators... Very clever and great performances. Icing on the cake of the audible.com experience we are used to.
Bravo!

Subtly is the Lynchpin

The author pulls the reader in with utter subtly. The story unfolds like a conversation the characters are having with each other, and also with themselves. She lets her characters draw you along without all the clutter of backstory or internal drama. No spoiler alert, but I loved Eva!

pretty good

I had higher hopes for the ending. I felt like I was really engaged and interested to see what would happen until the last few chapters. Felt like kind of a let down. Enjoyed the narrators.
