Il commissario Bordelli è andato in pensione e la malinconia si fa sentire, nonostante la presenza sempre più stretta della bella Eleonora e le immancabili cene della Confraternita. Il giovane sessantenne fa lunghe passeggiate in collina, ripensa al passato, e a poco a poco si fa strada nella sua mente l’idea di risolvere l’unico caso della sua carriera rimasto insoluto: un ragazzo, figlio di un industriale fascista, ucciso nel 1947 con diverse coltellate... forse una vendetta? Era la sua prima indagine, e all’epoca non era riuscito a venirne a capo, anche perché molto presto era arrivato l’ordine di lasciar perdere, non era il clima giusto per rovistare nelle tragedie della guerra, l’Italia aveva bisogno di pace e di serenità. Ma adesso, dopo ventitré anni, può provare a risolverlo, anche se non ufficialmente. Nel frattempo cerca di dare una mano a Piras, diventato vice commissario, e finisce per ritrovarsi alle prese con due crimini odiosi che reclamano giustizia, una giustizia che forse andrà cercata al di fuori delle regole...
