OMG I Love Ava!

What did you love best about Next on a Very Special That Ghoul Ava?

I love Ava meeting new characters and learning her new skills. I loved Muffy and the descriptive way TW has to show when she is in either of her forms. I thought it was genius introducing all the characters found in the basement and I could really see them in my head with all the descriptions.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the basement and all the new creatures that Ava found there - and saw the zombie making kid as Spicolli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Not a care in the world ;)

Have you listened to any of Pamela Lorence’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first book I have listened to that Pamela has read and I really enjoyed her acting as Ava. She really gets into character and it sounds like she has a lot of fun doing the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This book would have been great listening to it in one sitting. As it was, I broke it up into about 6 parts and found myself waiting to get back to the book!

Any additional comments?

I am blown away that TW - a man - can have so many insites into a woman's world. He is hilarious!

Back to the Ghoul i Love!

Would you listen to Next on a Very Special That Ghoul Ava again? Why?

I would possibly if/when i reread the series as a whole.

What other book might you compare Next on a Very Special That Ghoul Ava to and why?

I don't know what i would compare it to, there really isn't anything like this that i have read or listened to before.

What about Pamela Lorence’s performance did you like?

I like her performance that she pauses for the perfect amount of time to get the point across without it feeling like too much space. Her inflections are great and her blasay attitude she gives to ava's voice makes it that much more funny.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes i did, i wanted to know what happened next....well, really what trouble ava was going to get into :)

Any additional comments?

The last book wasn't my favorite but this book was Great! Love Ava's little side trips in her mind and then says something like "oh, i missed something... I'll catch up on that later" and never really seems to catch up until after all the trouble happens.

For a good time, call Ava

I am not usually into this genre, but a friend recommended the That Ghoul, Ava series to me, so I decided to give it a shot. I am glad I did! Author TW Brown weaves a fun bit of yarn that involves a tapestry of characters, including a cold and sardonic supernatural psychic, an overly confident Queen of the Zombies, a couple hot (but not sparkling) vampires, a templar-in-training, and of course, That Ghoul, Ava.

I originally read the books, and liked them so much, that when I got the chance to listen to and review the series on Audible, I leapt at the chance.

Ava becomes a Ghoul in the first book of the series. Her inner monologue is an adventure all on its own. She may or may not have a raging case of ADHD, which makes her an easy to identify with character for me. Her mind-wandering inner monologues rival that of JD on the TV show, Scrubs.

The cast of characters are fun and interesting, especially the way Ava describes them. Combine all of the above with a nice dose of '80s music fangirling, and you've got a recipe for a great listen.

Pamela Lorence does a nice job of narrating the stories, though I must say that my mind's voice for Ava was a lot more droll and Daria-like. Even so, I think she was a good choice for Ava's audiobook presence.

Something that is an added bonus is that the author of the series is on Facebook, and he is very nice, likes input, and actually replies when you write on his wall. It's not too often that you can have actual contact with writers of the books you're reading! You should just go ahead and use your credits or buy the series now. You can't go wrong. Fun books! I hope TW Brown does more with Ava.

Clever and Fun Paranormal with a satirical twist

AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall 4 Narration 3 Story 4

The fourth title in this series is a turning point for Ava: she has to decide, hero or villain. Until this point, she has been straddling that line as she learns about the various denizens of the supernatural world, their histories and their battles. She discovers more about her own alliances and purposes, discovering true friends and finding more new powers and abilities.

This is the point at which she has to learn to choose, and then to live with those choices: waffling between guilt and not giving a flying Frisbee about her own choices and actions just won’t work for her anymore. Tired of the ‘baby spoons’ of information she has been given by those in the know, her decision to get her answers, her way, unearths powers and abilities she did not know existed, and perhaps no-one wanted her to discover.

In terms of the story trajectory this fits perfectly in the arc and again furthers Ava’s growth, both elements feel perfectly acceptable and natural. Humor isn’t lost in this, even with the more serious topics under the microscope, and not unsurprisingly, Ava’s adaption to the new changes in circumstance are handled with her snarky asides and her do what’s needed approach.

Pamela Lorence returns to narrate this installment, and her performance is growing on me: still carrying that Barbie doll overtone, she’s incorporated the rather matter-of-fact deadpan delivery that notes Ava’s particularly humorous observations: particularly apt as Ava does not seem to realize she is funny. Another wonderful installment in this series.

I received an AudioBook copy of the title via AudioBook Jukebox for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
