EPIC Award Winning Series

Beneath an idyllic veneer of Southern country charm, the town of Newberry hides secrets that may have led to murder.

When a local landowner’s body, with pants down, is found near Tarleton’s Tea Table Rock - a notorious rendezvous spot, federal investigator Carolina Slade senses a chance to get back into the field again. Just as she discovers what might be a nasty pattern of fraud and blackmail, her petty boss reassigns her fledgling case to her close friend and least qualified person in their office.

Forced to coach an investigation from the sidelines, Slade struggles with the twin demons of professional jealousy and unplanned pregnancy. Something is rotten in Newberry. Her personal life is spiraling out of control. She can’t protect her co-worker. And Wayne Largo complicates everything when the feds step in after it becomes clear that Slade is right.

One wrong move, and Slade may lose everything. Yet it’s practically out of her hands...unless she finds a way to take this case back without getting killed.

Author C. Always an Exciting Read

Ms. Clark knows how to write characters you love to wish ill upon. And the whodunnit always surprises me. Her pacing is excellent and keeps the reader engaged. I’ve never felt “Oh, come on! Just get on with it!” or “I can’t take the stress anymore.” and stop reading. I’ve read both kinds. Hers is the perfect blend.

I’m making my way through the Carolina Slade books and am just so excited to start the next one. One more to go.

Thank you, Hope, for writing characters we love and those not so much.

This Story in Clark's fine series could have Used a Caution, that it contains a deeply shocking murder scene.

Hope Clark has the perfect voice for her character, Caroline Slade,. It held my attention through rich hours of listening. However, what happened to Cricket totally shocked me out of all proportion to this kind of location oriented, soft seeming southern mystery. I was so stunned at the image that confronted Slade and us!!!! that I quit the story and tried to find other 'reading " in its place. When I recovered my nerve, I wanted to know how it ended. The climactic scene was amazing, but did not clearly relate to the identity of the killer. That came as a total anti-climax. Also, I could not keep Cricket's mother in character for I would have thought ber grief inconsolable, and no cozy pound cake time was imaginable between her and Slade to me. The best part was the ending in Wayne's arms, for Slade and us. In no other murder mystery have I ever met a worse scene of rape and torture, and I hope I never shall again!!**

Felt dragged out

I got tired of her struggle to be able to investigate the case. it felt frustrating and made it difficult to follow at times.
