About this listen

In his latest voyage of discovery, Michael Palin reads his own account of a journey into a "new" Europe. He starts with a simple idea: that only a couple of hours from home is a half of Europe that is for him as unknown and unexplored as the plateau of Tibet or the vastness of the Sahara.©2014 Michael Palin (P)2014 Audible, Inc. AWESOME!

Michael Palin is well-known for his talented acting and as a talented comedian as one of the Monty Python gang. Well, he has another talent - as the author of his "travel" series with the BBC! The book is delightfully written, eloquent, and brings to life as though you were there! A talented man and a delightful "read"!

Facinating Eastern Europe

This is a great read. Who knew that Palin is such a great writer? The narrator is excellent too. A very pleasantly spoken brit, makes this book even more enjoyable and engaging. This is not a book about what to do and where to go and how to do it, rather, Palin's well told stories and encounters as he travels the ever changing landscape of Eastern Europe. It really makes you want to be there with him, or at least visit many of the places he writes about.

The Paler of Palin's books

I found this book really hard to get into. I love Micheal Palin's travel stories and I enjoy his readings, but this one just didn't grab me. Perhaps it would be better if I had seen the documentary, but I didn't find it as compelling as Sahara, Himalaya, Pole to Pole, Full Circle or 80 Days. I've not seen the full documentary for any of these save 80 Days and found all the books highly enjoyable. I think New Europe is an unfortunate miss from an otherwise excellent travel writer and audio performer.

Stick with Bill Bryson

I could not, for the life of me, get into this book. I was expecting a something akin to Bill Bryson given Palin's background in comedy. What I got was Rick Steves without the usefulness of a guidebook. It was like reading someone's fairly mundane journal. Don't get me wrong, the writing itself is good. So are the places he describes. But the overall story just left me completely bored. The reading, with his great voices, was a total letdown.
