Interesting and funny but...

Neil Patrick Harris has had an interesting life and has a great story to tell. He tells it well in this book, but all that is overshadowed at times by the "choose your own autobiography" plot device. I don't really care what the irrelevant and ridiculous alternate scenario is- Neil's story is enough to keep me interested on it's own. The "you" pronoun and silly alternates are distracting. Neil is a great reader and obviously knows his own story well enough to perform it well. If you overlook the plot interruptions and focus on the real story, this book is worth a listen.

Phenomenal listen

Hearing a book read by the author provides an opportunity to hear it as they intended you to. Add to that the creativity and showmanship of Neil Patrick Harris, and you have a thoroughly enjoyable adventure.

Great writing with an outstanding performance by the author. Funny and tender. Comments by guests would have been better in their own voices.

For the love of Doogie!!

I listened to this while getting dental work done. the upbeat tone of the story was very much appreciated. NPH has always been one of my favorite actors and I was glad to be invited into his world for a little while

Getting to know Neil Patrick Harris

Where does Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It was his life story to date so I can't rate it with other audiobooks. I can only tell you that I enjoyed listening to his story, but was able to put it down for a few days at a time as well.

What other book might you compare Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography to and why?

Amy Poehler's Yes, Please. You learn a little and it's enjoyable.

What about Neil Patrick Harris’s performance did you like?

He was into it. He committed the time to give a great performance.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I wouldn't make a film.

Neil negatively hints at John Travolta and Tom Cruise being gay. He didn't have a right to out someone who isn't ready. the book is about Neil, not John and Tom. Otherwise I think he did a decent job.

Neil's delivery of the material was perfect, of course.

What other book might you compare Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography to and why?

I've been listening to a lot of celeb bios and I'd say Nick Offerman, believe it or not. Not exactly, as Nick didn't follow the CYOA style, but still similar in content.

What about Neil Patrick Harris’s performance did you like?

He's very easy to listen to. There's enough animation in his voice to be interesting and inviting, but not so much as to be annoying or take attention away from the story. Neil just has great timing and inflection.

Any additional comments?

As much as I loved it (and I do love it), the Choose Your Own Adventure aspect makes the audiobook hard to follow. I love the idea and will probably buy an actual copy of the book, but it just struggles as an audiobook. Neil's performance makes up for it, but you can expect at least a few, "Wait, what?" moments.

This is easily one of my favorite autobiographies I have ever listened to. On par with Tina Fey's book.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed NPH reading his own book. It certainly added to the overall story. His life is fascinating. This is a book that every NPH fan should listen to.

I only wish that NPH goes on to do a hundred more amazing things so that he can write a sequel to this book!

Not a choice, a must have

This has got to be one of the best autobiographies I've ever read. The Choose Your Own Adventure format would have been fun in paper format, but they took the time to adapt it for the audio format is so nice. The behind the scenes stories were insightful, the family stories were touching, all while being funny.

The only negative I can think of is that I wish they'd put the magic tricks into the PDF file because I didn't have a deck of cards while listening.

If you're even the slightest fan of NPH, pick this up.

If you don't like him, give it a shot anyway. You'll probably be a fan afterwards.

NPH is NPH -- it's a good thing

I could have gone without the magic trick instructions, but in every other way I loved it. Love you NPH!
