Acerca de esta escucha

After the failure of the Weimar Republic, the Nazis believed their mission was to "masculinize" life in Germany. Hermann Goering told women, "Take a pot, a dustpan and a broom, and marry a man", but many still became active participants in murder and mayhem. From the Reich Bride Schools through the Bund Deutscher Mädel and the bizarre Lebensborn Aryan breeding programme to the brothels of the Sicherheitsdienst, this book covers the lives of women in the Third Reich, concentrating on those who sought personal power and influence amid the chaos and death.

Lots of intrigue, betrayal, sensuality, unimaginable cruelty, and glimmers of hope come together to tell a remarkable and frightening story that fills in the gaps of the conventional narratives of Nazi atrocities. You'll never think of German women the same way you did before after digesting this fascinating, carefully researched and beautifully performed audiobook.

There are some interesting personal stories buried in this tale of how we respond to the environments in which we find ourselves. We should not ask why people are attracted to violence and power, but rather how to keep them away from these things.

Unfortunately, human nature being as it is, there will always be people of both sexes like the women described here - who become 'someone else' when the opportunity arises. This is a human tale, and we should remember that almost all of us are capable of committing horrors given the right circumstances.

The reader does a very poor job getting German words correct . This needs to be addressed in future issues

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend to some of my friends that enjoy digging deeper into history.

If you’ve listened to books by Paul Roland before, how does this one compare?

First book I've read by this author.

Which character – as performed by Gabrielle Glaister – was your favorite?

NA

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, but it was still fascinating.

Any additional comments?

Narrator did a good job, but the author should have been more in-depth for a history examining this subject. The material the author presented was enriching.

Typical Roland stories, thorough, well researched and very well written. And Gabriella does an excellent job reading it.

Detailed factually and well read

Reader is fine - but content depends on rumors, inaccuracies. Discussions of AH anatomy & sexual disfunctions read as tabloid fodder - credible accounts on these topics are available. This content is simply speculations. Further bios and histories included are inaccurate and or simply incomplete. Would not recommend.

inaccurate / Tabloid

One of the most frustrating books I’ve encountered. Having listened to ~200 audiobooks on Germany/WWII, this stands out as the worst both in terms of narration and content. The narrator's delivery was unbearable, adding to an already flawed narrative soaked in bias and sensationalism. The book lacked any sense of objectivity, instead feeling more like a tabloid filled with disproven claims and sensational nonsense. If you value well-researched, unbiased history, stay far away from this one. It left me wishing I could get my brain cells back.

A Biased, Tabloid-like Disappointment
