Publisher's summary

Natural Selection is the third installment in The Protocols series, a series chronicling the rise and impact of authoritarianism in the modern era -- from the Industrial Revolution to the end of the Second World War. It begins where the second book, Blood & Soil, leaves off. Europe is now ruled almost exclusively by authoritarians: Hitler in Germany, Stalin in the U.S.S.R., Mussolini in Italy, Franco in Spain; Metaxas in Greece, often ruling hand in hand with the Church, or remnants of the monarchies which had brought Europe into the First World War; or cynical opportunists, like the Bolsheviks in the U.S.S.R., who pretend to champion the workers while denying them basic human rights. Against this wave of authoritarians Great Britain stands alone -- though hardly heroic, for its social order is dominated by a privileged, wealthy elite -- many of whom fear the British working class -- the so-called "communists" (which includes members of the labor unions, the intellectuals, the refugees, the immigrants, and the Jews), any threat to the status quo -- almost as much as they fear Hitler and his Third Reich. Though the setting of the third book in the series is the Battle of Britain and the Blitz, the primary focus of the series are the lives of people caught in events. Like all the books in the series, Natural Selection is composed of excerpts taken from letters, memoirs, diaries, situation reports, radio transcripts, and other historical documents selected not only for their ability to illustrate the past, but for their relevance in terms of the times in which we live.
