About this listen

Few know the city of Los Angeles the way number one best-selling author and acclaimed suspense master Jonathan Kellerman does. His thrilling novels of psychological drama and criminal detection make the capital of dreams a living, breathing character in all its glamour and infamy. That storied history of fame, seduction, scandal, and murder looms large in Mystery, as Alex Delaware finds himself drawn into a twisting, shadowy whodunit that’s pure LA noir - and vintage Kellerman.

The closing of their favorite romantic rendezvous, the Fauborg Hotel in Beverly Hills, is a sad occasion for longtime patrons Alex Delaware and Robin Castagna. And gathering one last time with their fellow faithful habitués for cocktails in the gracious old venue makes for a bittersweet evening. But even more poignant is a striking young woman - alone and enigmatic among the revelers - waiting in vain in elegant attire and dark glasses that do nothing to conceal her melancholy. Alex can’t help wondering what her story is and whether she’s connected to the silent, black-suited bodyguard lingering outside the hotel.

Two days later, Alex has even more to contemplate when Police Detective Milo Sturgis comes seeking his psychologist comrade’s insights about a grisly homicide. To Alex’s shock, the brutalized victim is the same beautiful woman whose lonely hours sipping champagne at the Fauborg may have been her last.

But with a mutilated body and no DNA match, she remains as mysterious in death as she seemed in life. And even when a tipster’s sordid revelation finally cracks the case open, the dark secrets that spill out could make Alex and Milo’s best efforts to close this horrific crime not just impossible but fatal.

Find the Perp

This Kellerman may have the most demanding detection yet. The secondary plot featuring Gretchen is especially engaging. Listeners, prepare to appreciate another tour de force!

Jonathan Kellerman's stories are at the top of my favorites in audio or print form.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love Milo Sturgis and his sarcastic take on police work.

Which character – as performed by John Rubinstein – was your favorite?

Again, Milo Sturgis is my favorite.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I don't know.

Old Hollywood, same 'ol story

The story goes back to old Hollywood, but it's the same Jonathan Kellerman. It's eerie that pretty much everyone Sturgis and Delaware interview sound exactly the same; they constantly interrupt and jump to offbeat conclusions. That is every witness or potential witness, all of whom with the same reactions and speech patterns. The author has found his groove and his books no longer vary much from one book to another, let alone one character to another. Still, the basic story is excellent and Robin, who is an underutilized character, plays a larger role than usual. This book is nothing great, particularly among those in this series, but if you are a fan of the Delaware/Sturgis collection you'll enjoy it anyway.

John Rubinstein's voices

John Rubenstein's use of different voices to delineate the characters is the best I've encountered.

Keep me interested but not the best story line

Would you consider the audio edition of Mystery to be better than the print version?

Did not read the printed version.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The widow Suss- She obviously has a sorted past and come from nothing; now she is high society but you cannot leave your roots.

Which scene was your favorite?

The Suss twins in the pool with the hookers.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

We are all actors!!

Any additional comments?

The plot was better than the ending. The ending drug on way too long.

Good...

What made the experience of listening to Mystery the most enjoyable?

I love the Alex Delaware novels. John Rubinstein, as always, brings the stories to life. This one was not destined for the literature books, but it's a good story with outstanding narration.

At this point, I won't purchase/listen to any Delaware novels unless Rubinstein is the narrator.

What does John Rubinstein bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He completely brings this series and cast of characters to life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.
