饱尝人间辛酸的阿廖沙，抱着进大学读书的理想来到喀山，但那时的大学是不向穷人开放的，理想破灭的阿廖沙不久便参加了秘密的革命活动。贫苦的生活使他在伏尔加河一带流浪，和搬运工、小偷、乞丐生活在一起。后来，他在面包店找到工作，向工人们传播革命理想，参加了大学生的秘密组织，鼓励工人罢工。社会的腐朽和个人的困境使他自杀未遂而受伤。伤愈后，他带着新生的力量，离开喀山，重新走上流浪的道路。
