About this listen
When a protective young man finds a vicious solution to his troubles, will he save his family or unleash a deadly nightmare?
Brady Bennett can’t shake his guilt. Blaming himself for his dad’s fatal hunting accident seven years prior, the eighteen-year-old doesn’t trust his cruel stepdad and worries for his twin sister. But his suffering takes a strange twist after fleeing into the woods from a nasty school bully, only to see his attacker get ripped to pieces by a savage beast.
Fearing no one will believe his wild story or that they’ll blame him for the boy’s death, Brady sets out to capture the murderous creature and use it for his own ends. And when the monster transforms back into a man desperate to stop the carnage, the teen promises to free him in exchange for one final gory deed.
Will Brady’s plot to take out his enemies spill the blood of innocents?
My Pet Werewolf is a disturbing horror novel. If you like resourceful but flawed heroes, dark themes, and good intentions gone bad, then you’ll be gripped by James Kaine’s merciless tale.

Story
When two marines and their corpsman reunite after a decade apart, they find themselves caught up in the mystery of their former squad leader’s disappearance. With little more to go on than a handful of disturbing charcoal sketches and the whispers of a local legend, they plunge into the depths of one of America’s last truly wild places. But the trees themselves begin to whisper dark secrets. Secrets of trafficking and violence. Of rotten science and blood. Of something else that lurks in the shadows of the pines—something ancient, savage, and hungry.

Story
A werewolf is preying upon the denizens of a small town. The only people who know what it is, who understand what is happening, are children. A group of third-graders isn't exactly the most credible source of information, especially when it comes to the fantastical. They grow up being ridiculed, shunned, bullied, and mistreated by their peers and the broader community. Years later, it returns, but this time, Thomas and his friends are prepared for it. As grown werewolf hunters, they must use every bit of courage they have to face the monster. Nothing short of killing it will suffice.

My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

THREE HOURS
That's how long it took for this 8.5 hour audio book to start werewolfing. The first 3 hours is pure YA boredom, focusing on the antagonist's bullying, love life, and domestic angst.
I suggest you listen to the first 3 hours on double speed to avoid the frustration. I wish I had.

Great idea.
The narration was superb and the plot decent with an unexpected twist. Could've used a little less violence but that is to be expected worth a werewolf novel. Overall, I really enjoyed it as my first audio book purchase and makes cross-country travel bearable.

Compelling coming-of-age horror tale
Excellent writing combined with the right narrator make this a tense, thrilling, and entertaining horror novel with a dash of high school drama. I have a pretty high tolerance for horror, but parts of it were pretty scary. The first person perspective from 18-year-old Brady is a great writing choice. The main characters are interesting and have depth and intelligence, especially Brady and his sister Brandy. I enjoyed the combination of monster and human psycho horror in a rural New Jersey setting. Brady is a normal young man faced with surprising situations and decisions to make.
Although I wouldn't want to listen to it with a weak stomach, the occasional blood and gore is only a little bit gratuitous. The story contains minimal sexual content, almost closed-door type of scenes, which is very tasteful. There is brief mention of sexual assault. I liked the detail that Brady always practiced gun safety and stored his guns under lock and key.
The only tiny flaw in the story was the slightly confusing timeline in the first couple of chapters when Brady was jumping from memory to memory without clear transition sentences. Thankfully after the first two chapters the story is completely and continuously set during Brady's senior year of high school. The plot was excellent, and I did not detect any plot holes or loose ends. I am really impressed with the high quality of the writing that quickly immersed me in the story, and I didn’t want to take stop listening.
The narrator Christopher Harbour delivered an excellent performance. I was so impressed that I will look for his other work. His character voices were all distinctive and believable, including those of the female characters. Christopher Harbour had great pacing and was marvelous at all the action scenes. He really brought the story to life. His normal narration voice sounded young enough to be the thoughts of 18-year-old Brady.
I requested and received a free audio copy via the publisher, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review. #TheFlockVIPReviewTeam #NorthernLakeAudio
