Acerca de esta escucha

Ginger Price was a twenty-eight-year-old virgin and did not understand the basic mechanics of sex. In addition to abstaining from spreading her legs, Ginger avoided coffee, tea, and alcohol like the good Mormon girl she was raised to be. She believed that by avoiding these things, she was honoring God and in turn, God would protect her from the fiery darts of Satan and the human evils of the world.

My Dear Rapist is a collection of 43 letters to Ginger’s rapist that illustrate how a sheltered upbringing in Mormonism led to a woman’s worst nightmare. Through her letters, Ginger humanizes herself to her rapist while chronicling the growth and transformation that came from battling misogyny and shame that is so easily found within a patriarchal, high-demand religion. Ginger’s narrative exposes a vital need for open-minded, safe, and healthy conversations surrounding sex so that women can make better-informed decisions about their sex lives and be kept safe from gender-based violence.

My Dear Rapist adds to the ongoing cultural conversations about what is sexual trauma and abuse and highlights how the cages of misogyny oppress women, keeping them silent and tamed within phallocentric, subscribed gender roles. Ginger’s audience of 40 million people who have left a high-demand religion in the last 25 years, and the millions of victims and survivors who have endured rape and sexual assault will find empowerment in Ginger’s story as they switch the narrative and stake the claim that they own their abuser, they own their healing, and they own their story. They can learn that the stitching of physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse can unravel when they discover their own language to safely speak about their wounds.

This was one of the most raw and impactful audiobooks I’ve ever listened to. The author—an ex Mormon woman—shares her painful and deeply personal story of abuse at the hands of an Olympian with such honesty and courage. What makes it even more powerful is that she narrates the book herself.

When she reads through the parts of her story where she was most terrified, you can hear her voice crack with emotion—and rather than taking away from the experience, it made it feel even more real and intimate. It’s not just a story of trauma, but of resilience, faith, and the strength it takes to speak the truth out loud.

It was heartbreaking, eye-opening, and incredibly moving. I’m so grateful she chose to share her story. I’ll be thinking about this one for a long time.

A powerfully, brave and personal story!

My tears began while Ginger was introducing herself in opening credits. I appreciate that even though she is a non believer in Mormonism, she was respectful to those who still believe. She so eloquently shares her unraveling of her life to show that she is a fighter and victorious in taking control of her life. I was raped by two male figures living in my home at the age of 5-6. I have carried this shame throughout my life. I never spoke of it until I was well in my 30’s. I thought it was normal for boys/men to experiment with young girls. My loving husband explained otherwise. I thought Gingers book would trigger me but it in fact showed me that my behaviors of scrupulously is in fact a cultural behavior triggered by my abuse and the male leaders of the church. I couldn’t stop listening to her. Her voice was calm and soothing as she told her story. I finally felt like someone else understands my life. Thank you Ginger for writing such a beautiful and heartbreaking journey. Mr Bill, thank you for being a man of character and showing what true love is with a sexual abuse survivor.

The vulnerability to share her most intimate details of her life.
