About this listen

The world knows Aimee Leduc, heroine of 15 mysteries in this New York Times best-selling series, as a tres chic, no-nonsense private investigator - the toughest and most relentless in Paris. Now author Cara Black dips back in time to reveal how Aimee first became a detective....

November 1989: Aimee Leduc is in her first year of college at Paris' preeminent medical school. She lives in a 17th-century apartment that overlooks the Seine with her father, who runs the family detective agency.

But the week the Berlin Wall crumbles, so does Aimee's life as she knows it. First, someone has sabotaged her lab work, putting her at risk of failing out of the program. Then, she finds out her aristo boyfriend is planning to get engaged to another woman. And finally, Aimee's father takes off to Berlin on a mysterious errand. He asks Aimee to help out at the detective agency while he's gone - as if she doesn't already have enough to do. But the case Aimee finds herself investigating - a murder linked to a transport truck of Nazi gold that disappeared in the French countryside during the height of World War II - has gotten under her skin. Her heart may not lie in medicine after all - maybe it's time to think harder about the family business.

Great Prequal

I have listened to Aimee Leduc recorded books by other narrators and this narrator is the best. Her French is flawless. I loved finally hearing the story of how Aimee got started in the detective business, and her father’s influence and death.

French Lesson

If you could sum up Murder on the Quai in three words, what would they be?

Pretty Good Story

What three words best describe Carine Montbertrand’s voice?

Nice but annoying when referencing any of the many French words. I felt like she was putting way too much accent on each word. Like she was trying to teach French language and French pronunciation. It was too guttural at times and very annoying. It didn't read smooth. Because of this, I would have enjoyed the paper form better, I think.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No it's not really that kind of book.

Prequel

I was not expecting a prequel. I found it interesting as it explained a little more about Aimee’s father, how she met Renee, and her relationship with many people that we have met in earlier books

However, the story, her first murder investigation, was really predictable.

I have to say I really do like this voice actor. I love when she is pronouncing things in French. And since she is the voice actor for most of the first book, I expect the character’s to sound like her portrayal.

The real thermometer for how good a book is to me would be whether I will read it again. I will not be reading this one on a reread.

Too French!

The French names and accent defined it. I had trouble comprehending story. I needed a more English version
