The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Wonderful Series
This is the 9th book in this series. They just keep getting better. The first book was so, so but I got through it and kept on. I am so glad I did. This was one of the best.

Hillary has had an impeccable career with a truly impressive solution record but is suffering the mind crushing grief known to those of us who have weathered the sudden death of a loved one at close range. She goes back to work but can't quite feel anything. Add in that the widow of her best friend is pregnant and unreasonable about finding and dealing with the man who assassinated the DCI beloved by all in his department. The civilian murder case come in just as Hillary returns and is just baffling, but the team manages to get it all together despite all odds.
Gemma Dawson is the voice actor who really brings even more credibility to the story.

Good story
The characters and plot lines are developed well and complex. These are not cozy mysteries and yet I am still drawn to them for escape.
