About this listen

After 20 years of loyal service, Detective Jane Bauer is just two months and one case away from leaving the NYPD for a cushy desk job. Her last assignment: working for a special unit that tackles unsolved crimes. At a crossroads in her personal life, Jane relishes the chance to lose herself in a challenging investigation.

Four years ago, Arlen Quill was found dead in the entryway to his apartment building - leaving no clues, no witnesses, and no leads. When Jane decides to interview Quill’s old neighbors, she makes a startling discovery: Every single occupant at the time of the murder subsequently disappeared. Like any seasoned New Yorker, Jane knows that mere homicide isn’t enough to drive people from their rent-controlled apartments. In Hell’s Kitchen, where a cold case suddenly heats up - Jane soon finds herself face-to-face with a killer....

Sorry--couldn't bring myself to finish listening

Well, this book seemed to have a lot of appeal--the plot sounded interesting, I love books of this sort, and so I settled in to listen. I'll make this short. The writing was tedious--I checked out shortly after listening to an incredibly boring inventory of everything each officer went to a cabinet and took to put into their desks before beginning their work on a cold case. Details add a lot to a book, but not those just added as useless fillers. The narration was flat and bland. Wish I could say more, I never feel very good writing a review that doesn't find something to compliment. And towards that end, I think the premise of the book is interesting--and it might be much better in it's written version. I think I could maybe find it more engaging in that format.

Continued Affair with Married Man Killed it for Me

The cold case murder mystery was good . . . and got better and better as time went on. If not for Detective Jane Bauer’s continued affair with a married man (also on the police force), I’d be continuing the series. I am a HUGE fan of the Christine Bennett series by the same author. If you can get past the justification for a ten plus year affair with a married man, this one may be for you.
