About this listen
Fairy-tale romances end with a wedding, and the fairy tales don't get complicated. In this book, celebrated writer Mr. Fox can't stop himself from killing off the heroines of his novels, and neither can his wife, Daphne. It's not until Mary, his muse, comes to life and transforms him from author into subject that his story begins to unfold differently.
Mary challenges Mr. Fox to join her in stories of their own devising; and so through different times and places, the two of them seek each other, find each other, thwart each other, and try to stay together, even when the roles they inhabit seem to forbid it. Their adventures twist the fairy tale into nine variations, exploding and teasing conventions of genre and romance, and each iteration explores the fears that come with accepting a lifelong bond.
Meanwhile, Daphne becomes convinced that her husband is having an affair, and finds her way into Mary and Mr. Fox's game. And so Mr. Fox is offered a choice: Will it be a life with the girl of his dreams, or a life with an all-too-real woman who delights him more than he cares to admit?
The extraordinarily gifted Helen Oyeyemi has written a love story like no other. Mr. Fox is a magical book, endlessly inventive, as witty and charming as it is profound in its truths about how we learn to be with one another.

Story
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

Jeanette Winterson’s bold and revelatory novels have established her as a major figure in world literature. This memoir is the chronicle of a life’s work to find happiness. It is a book full of stories: about a girl locked out of her home, sitting on the doorstep all night; about a religious zealot disguised as a mother who has two sets of false teeth and a revolver in the dresser drawer; about growing up in a north England industrial town in the 1960s and 1970s; and about the universe as a cosmic dustbin.

Story
Anwuli Okwudili prefers to be called AO. To her, these initials have always stood for Artificial Organism. AO has never really felt...natural, and that's putting it lightly. Her parents spent most of the days before she was born praying for her peaceful passing because even in-utero she was "wrong". But she lived. Then came the car accident years later that disabled her even further. Yet instead of viewing her strange body the way the world views it, as freakish, unnatural, even the work of the devil, AO embraces all that she is.

Story
The tellers of Greek myths—historically men—have routinely sidelined the female characters. When they do take a larger role, women are often portrayed as monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil—like Pandora, the woman of eternal scorn and damnation whose curiosity is tasked with causing all the world’s suffering and wickedness when she opened that forbidden box. But, as Natalie Haynes reveals, in ancient Greek myths there was no box. It was a jar . . . which is far more likely to tip over.

Story
For the past twenty-five years, Margaret Atwood has written works of striking originality and imagination. In The Blind Assassin, she stretches the limits of her accomplishments as never before, creating a novel that is entertaining and profoundly serious. The novel opens with these simple, resonant words: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister drove a car off the bridge." They are spoken by Iris, whose terse account of her sister Laura's death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental.

A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

Ann Patchett’s award winning, New York Times best-selling Bel Canto balances themes of love and crisis as disparate characters learn that music is their only common language. As in Pratchett’s other novels, including Truth & Beauty and The Magician’s Assistant, the author’s lyrical prose and lucid imagination make Bel Canto a captivating story of strength and frailty, love and imprisonment, and an inspiring tale of transcendent romance.

It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate; she works an easy job at a hip art gallery and lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

At the center of this invigorating novel are two unlikely friends, Archie Jones and Samad Iqbal. Hapless veterans of World War II, Archie and Samad and their families become agents of England’s irrevocable transformation. A second marriage to Clara Bowden, a beautiful, albeit tooth-challenged, Jamaican half his age, quite literally gives Archie a second lease on life, and produces Irie, a knowing child whose personality doesn’t quite match her name (Jamaican for “no problem”). Samad’s late-in-life arranged marriage produces twin sons whose separate paths confound Iqbal’s every effort to direct them.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
The narrator was excellent and made this book enjoyable. I doubt if I had read the book that I would have finished it.
What was most disappointing about Helen Oyeyemi???s story?
I found the plot to be non-existant. It was more a collection of short stories. I wish it had been marketed that way.

The performance was so great, I honestly think I probably had an extra spectacular experience hearing it for the first time rather than reading it (which is not something I've ever said before). That's saying a lot because the story/writing itself is already phenomenal.

Great narration but thin on plot
This book irritated me so much that I considered abandoning it several times. Maybe it wasn't meant to be heard as an audiobook but it just didn't gel for me. Unconnected sections kind of pieced together.
Then "Some Foxes" came along and I loved it so much that I bumped this review 2 whole stars. Part 2 is that good.

Probably a better read than listen
Would you consider the audio edition of Mr. Fox to be better than the print version?
Probably not since there are no audible chapter breaks, so the story shifts very quickly without warning, and sometimes it is difficult to follow along. Additionally, some of the accents were very difficult to understand.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mary, because her story is probably the most complex. I would love to figure out which stories were true, or had a truth to them.
Which scene was your favorite?
Probably the boys' boarding school story. The ending was kind of haunting and gave me chills, and the whole idea of boys being trained to be perfect husbands is a great satire on Victorian-era views of women.
If you could take any character from Mr. Fox out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Mr. Fox, definitely. He's very witty. I'd also love to figure out which stories were his and which were Mary's. Also, to try to pick his brain about what happened to Mary. I also really love the letters between Sinjin and Mary early in the book.
Any additional comments?
I was actually very surprised by the ending.... But I won't say too much lest I give something away.

A Great Novel, just Poor for Audio
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Helen Oyeyemi has spun a very clever tale about a man, his muse and his wife. But the novel has a challenging structure, switching voices between the three main characters, and adding in a number of clever fairy tales in between chapters.
It was difficult to listen to the book because of the shifting narrators. Ms. Boyd uses different voices, but I didn't catch on to what was really going on until 2/3rds of the way through the book. I just think a complex book like this one would be better read than listened to.
Have you listened to any of Carol Boyd’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Mr. Fox?
I'm sure the book is excellent. I have listened to Boy Snow Bird, another Oyeyemi book, which only has two voices, and I really enjoyed it. I intend to get a copy of the book someday and re-read it.
