They Don't Just Hunt Monsters - They Destroy Them

Having selflessly abandoned their identities, their pasts and their futures, the Monster Aces are all that stand between humanity and the fell creatures that lurk in the shadows. Four men and one woman use their amazing abilities as a team to scour the globe for monsters and bring an end to their unholy existence - whatever the danger, whatever the cost. Through five thrilling tales crafted by some of heroic fiction's most engaging authors you will ride alongside the Aces on the trail of monsters both classic and new. No environment is too severe nor too remote for these adventurers to seek their prey and destroy them forever. The team, led by a mysterious military veteran, uncover evil in mysterious European villages, in dark forests and fetid swamps, in ancient rivers and on the high seas...monsters are everywhere, but so too are the Monster Aces. Concept creator Jim Beard is joined by writers Ron Fortier, Barry Reese, and Van Plexico for a new twist on the classic monster stories of yore, a unique melding of horror and driving pulp action that will thrill and chill you.

I love Ron forties brother bones and the old time radio feel his stories and audiobooks have. This first book of stories about the monster aces doesn’t disappoint. There are three other authors who also have stories in here of the same style. To me this reminded me of a team like that of John carpenters vampire hunters but with the BPRD type of monsters. Really great collections I can’t wait to get into the second one. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

The first three stories had me sorely in doubt, but the last two redeemed them somewhat. That said, the characters were thin, two-dimentional, and the glimpses at their backstory just made me feel like I'd missed a story... The monsters in the first three were somewhat interesting, but somehow didn't inspire much suspense. In fact, I started out with the impression that younger readers might have been the target audience. A better narrator might have done more with the material - in fact, these stories might be better suited for a dramatic presentation, audio or visual, in which actors could bring the characters to life and music and sound effects could enhance the atmosphere - although his greatest failing was the mispronunciation of words. But it's possible that bad editing could've also been the issue as at one point the word 'remunerating' was used when 'ruminating' would have been more logical. And, if I'm honest, I really didn't like the name: Monster Aces. Also, their attitude towards and relationship with Trill was a bit tiresome after hearing it described in five stories. She's like their tag-along little sister; no one wants her interfering in their boy's only club, even though she always makes valuable contributions to their efforts. I could go on...but I think you better just listen now and decide for yourself...

This is a fine collection of short stories that pays tribute to the pulp magazines. Set in the 1920s, it records the adventures of five people who seek out monsters threatening humanity and destroy them. Each short story is written by a different author, but they all managed to keep the feeling of the group intact. It reminded me a lot of Doc Savage and his crew. There is no scientific genius among the Monster Aces, but they each have their specialty and the camaraderie between the men and one woman worked well.

An advantage to the short story format is that you don’t have to commit to long reading times. This is especially helpful when you are listening to the book in audio format while running errands in your car as I did. They’re good stories. I will definitely read the sequel collection.

Lots of Fun

This narrator sounds like he was born without a nose. I'm not intending to be rude, but how can so many narrators have no self-awareness about their voice?

Absolutely Unlistenable
