La motivazione principale che spinge Filippo Nassetti a questo "volo" è il ricordo di suo fratello Alberto, pilota tragicamente deceduto in giovane età, il cui nome vi potrebbe esser capitato di leggere sulla carlinga di un aereo.
La sua figura e la sua vicenda fanno da filo conduttore alla collana di storie che unisce altri piloti e svela i loro lati non oscuri, ma meno conoscibili. La passione irresistibile di Alberto è la miccia che ne innesca di altrettanto totalizzanti. La scelta è precoce, il rischio evidente, la soddisfazione irrinunciabile. Per volare Alberto rinuncia a un destino più facile, per continuare a farlo lo volgerà in dramma. Cosa motiva un pilota? Filippo Nassetti cerca la risposta meno scontata, atterrando i suoi personaggi. Proprio raccontandoci altro di loro ci fa capire perché "staccano l'ombra da terra".
