About this listen

Blake Butler and Molly Brodak instantly connected, fell in love, married, and built a life together. Both writers with deep roots in contemporary American literature, their union was an iconic joining of forces between two major and beloved talents.

Nearly three years into their marriage, grappling with mental illness and a lifetime of trauma, Molly took her own life. In the days and weeks after Molly’s death, Blake discovered shocking secrets she had held back from the world, fundamentally altering his view of their relationship and who she was.

A masterpiece of autobiography, Molly is a riveting journey into the darkest and most unthinkable parts of the human heart, emerging with a hard-won, unsurpassably beautiful understanding that expands the possibilities of language to comprehend and express true love.

Unrelentingly clear, honest and concise, Molly approaches the impossible directly, with a total empathy that has no parallel or precedent. A supremely important work that will be taught, loved, relied on, and passed around for years to come, Blake Butler affirms now beyond question his position at the very top rank of writers.

An impossible task

This story was so heartbreaking, but the way he shares his perspective on Molly and her role in the life they shared left me conflicted. I’d hate to hear all these things about me after I died. The first section and the last two sections were written so beautifully. Thank you for producing this Audible!

Good Example of someone with complex ptsd and bpd

Good example of mental illness. Honest disclosure of human life. Vulnerable author. Interesting but not inspiring.

Oh for Pete’s Sake!

What I liked about the book was that Molly seemed to be an extraordinarily interesting person. At least she was interesting to the author. Although she appears to be fairly consistently pushy, rude unkind and a teller of tall tales. None the less they appear to have that maudlin dig up your biggest horror show and go so deeply and artfully into it no one will give a crap when you have finished thing, in common.
I was really looking forward to this book and have checked back several times to look for the release date. I thought the book would be more about Molly and her entire life and less about the authors lasting and continuous overwhelming grief with out let up…ever. By the final hour of the book I can honestly say the only way Molly could have redeemed herself would have been if she had taken the jackass who was asking for and receiving her husbands money from her, with her ,when she decided it was time to go

SKIP THIS - Everyone Sucks

Tl;dr they were both mentally ill assholes. She killed herself and he learned nothing. Now he is exploiting his dead wife for financial gain.
