Critic reviews

"Gang violence and urban poverty play an integral part in this novel, but what readers will remember most is the brothers' deep-rooted affection for one another. An intelligently wrought, thought-provoking story. Ages 10-up." (Publishers Weekly)

Tear jerker!

I enjoyed this book and the narrator was great. I read this book because its a required text for my ninth grade students. I think this story is something my group of students and/or someone they know may be able to relate to.

Beautiful

This woman can write! I read this book in print several years ago, and enjoyed finding and hearing it on audible. Jackie is a treasure. Her stories and characters are filled with all that is loving and kind and human in all of us. I am looking forward to what she writes next.

Clean and value filled literature

Great teaching opportunity for teenagers on the value of family, second chances and sacrificing for loved ones. Narration is in keeping with current challenges faced by young adults. My 13 year old enjoyed listening and I am sure benefited from the message. Really appreciated the fact that this book did not have any obscenities which is something hard to find in books geared for younger readers.

Amazing

Dule Hill is a genius in this audio version of this book. I purchased this book for my 9th grade struggling readers to listen to as they read along to the novel in class. COMPLETELY WORTH EVERY PENNY. My students were engaged, interested, and loved coming to class on days when I let Dule read to them instead of me!
