Acerca de esta escucha
North Dakota’s Bakken oil fields held the promise of unimaginable wealth… But for some, the price was paid in blood.
James Henrikson was a man driven by greed and a lust for power. A mix of charm and ruthlessness, he carefully concealed his criminal past while rising to oilfield royalty alongside his equally deceptive wife, Sarah Creveling. But their short-lived empire was fragile, a house of cards held together by lies. When it all began to crumble, James was blinded by rage and consumed by a need for revenge.
Kristopher “K. C.” Clarke, young, well-liked, and full of promise, vanished without a trace one cold North Dakota morning—his belongings left behind, his fate a baffling mystery. Nearly two years later outside Spokane, Washington, Doug Carlile, a beloved family man with big dreams, was gunned down in his own home.
The two victims had one chilling connection: James Henrikson. What followed was a high-stakes race to unravel a tangled web of conspiracy, murder, and betrayal. As federal and local investigators closed in, the truth was even more staggering than anyone expected.

On November 22, 1963, the author of Behind the Scenes was a young Dallas Times Herald reporter who sprinted from his newspaper desk to Dealey Plaza minutes after shots were fired at President John F. Kennedy. Eyewitnesses he found at Dealey Plaza included Abraham Zapruder, who insisted from the first moments that the president could not have survived the serious wounds he had seen so clearly through his camera viewfinder.

Across American history, the question of whose lives are long and healthy and whose lives are short and sick has always been shaped by the social and economic order. From the dispossession of Indigenous people and the horrors of slavery to infectious diseases spreading in overcrowded tenements and the vast environmental contamination caused by industrialization, and through climate change and pandemics in the twenty-first century, those in power have left others behind.

Historia
From the 1970s to the early 1990s, New York City was seen, justifiably, as out of control. The city approached bankruptcy, the subways were covered with graffiti, and murders were at a record high. Right-wing fearmongering and vigilante justice were countered by liberal pleas to end poverty and provide drug treatment—none of which happened. Then, in a surprising break from the past, new NYPD leadership decided to focus on crime. Between 1993 and 1996, New York City's murder numbers were cut in half, dropping to under 1,000 for the first time in decades.

Captain William Kidd stands as one of the most notorious "pirate" outlaws ever, but his legend is tainted by a bed of lies. Having captivated imaginations for more than three hundred years and inspired many stories about pirates, troubling questions remain. Was he really a criminal or is the truth more inconvenient: that he was a buccaneer's worst nightmare, a revered pirate hunter turned fall guy for scheming politicians?

Historia
For almost five decades after the Second World War, the Iron Curtain divided Europe, standing as the longest and most heavily guarded border on earth. With the risk of nuclear annihilation too high for physical combat, conflict was reserved for the psychological sphere. No one understood this battle of hearts, minds, and intellects more clearly than Bucharest-born George Minden, the head of a covert intelligence operation known as the “CIA books program.” This initiative aimed to win the Cold War with literature.

Historia
No episode in NYPD history surpasses the depravities of Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa, two decorated detectives who covertly acted as mafia informants and paid assassins in the Scorsese world of 1980s Brooklyn. For more than ten years, Eppolito and Caracappa moonlighted as the mob's early warning alert system, leaking names of mobsters secretly cooperating with the government and crippling investigations by sharing details of surveillance, phone taps, and impending arrests. The Lucchese boss called the two detectives his crystal ball: Whatever detectives knew, the mafia soon learned.

Nora Davies doesn’t exactly fit in to Winter Park, Florida, where old-guard Floridians mix with the tax-fleeing coastal elite. Twenty-eight and barely making ends meet working at a country club, Nora feels like she’s going nowhere fast. Enter Will Somerset: a prominent forty-six-year-old lawyer, father to a teenage daughter, and recently divorced. The two set Winter Park’s social scene agog when they fall in love and marry after a whirlwind Cinderella-style courtship. But Winter Park is fully upended when Will disappears the morning after a birthday bash Nora throws for him.

C.J. Wynn dives into the dark side of the North Dakota oil boom, where greed, deception, and murder intersect.
The story follows James Henrikson, a man driven by power and revenge, and the consequences of his violent ambition—from the disappearance of K.C. Clarke to the shocking murder of Doug Carlile.
The writing is strong, with timelines that keep you on edge. Some parts slow down just a bit, but it always picks back up with high-stakes tension.
What really makes this audiobook shine, though, is Marcus Barton's narration.
Barton is phenomenal—his delivery is clear, engaging, and perfectly paced. He strikes the right tone throughout, whether he's voicing sinister manipulation or moments of heartbreak and suspense. He doesn’t just read the story—he performs it, and it makes all the difference.
Highly recommended if you love well-crafted true crime with a psychological edge and top-tier narration. I couldn’t stop listening.
