About this listen

This wasn’t the adventure she’d signed up for…A sexy boss, a rough crossing, and pirates - all Brylie Winston wanted was a job to help her earn money to buy her own restaurant. She hopes to earn it by working as a chef on a cruise to Antarctica. But she’s slept with her boss, which throws her off-balance even more than the rough seas and warnings of pirates in the area. And he’s determined to have a repeat performance.

Bad boy former snowboarder Marcus Devlin is running from his reputation, sent to learn the family business after decking a senator’s son and making the papers. So maybe he indulged in a last-minute fling before boarding his family’s cruise ship to Antarctica. Perhaps Fate is showing him that wasn’t so bad - the gorgeous redhead who snuck out of his bed is on the cruise. She’ll be a lovely distraction during his exile.

But when modern-day pirates take over the ship, his instinct is to protect her and the other passengers. But what does a spoiled rich boy know about saving people’s lives?

Good for a sale.

Overall I liked this book, but I won't read it again. I would rate it at 3.5. This book had a lot happening, but a few times at the beginning, the story lost my attention, maybe I was just tired. The second half was much better. I can't put my finger on why I didn't get sucked into the book it had all the makings for something I would devour, I just didn't. I got this book with the Whispersync program for only 1.98, although I don't think it is that price anymore. Narrator is pretty good, but her accents sucks.

Thrilling contempo romance

This is a really interesting contempo romance. There is a lot going on and it definitely keeps things hopping.

The story kicks off with a little walk of shame. Brylie is a complex lady who both owns her sexuality and hides from it. She has a fun sassy streak and makes dishy Playboy Marcus work for her love.

The bedroom door is mostly open but not hugely detailed. They definitely get frisky and steam a few times, but all were appropriately timed. I hate when there is a life or death situation and characters are having sex. None of that here.

This is so much more than a romance though! It is also a thrilling adventure with pirates hijacking the cruise and our leads saving the day! I would have loved more detail on the hijacking a bit more interaction with the pirates.

The story is a mixed narrative going back and forth between the two leads POV. I love this because it makes for a more well rounded romance. It is also a great way to get into their heads and gain perspective on their feelings and motivations.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Erin Mallon. She does a great job with the pace and keeps the action moving. I loved her ladies voices and most of the men. The one exception, and it is kinda major, is the male lead's Australian accent. It was heavy handed and difficult to listen to at times. It would have been so much better with a light touch or no accent at all.

Overall, I enjoyed the book a great deal. There were several times when it felt like the story was wrapping up, when suddenly more tragedy or drama would strike. The end kind of dragged because of these turns. At one point I though my goodness these people have dome bad luck. Still I enjoyed the book and would be interested in seeing it become a series. Perhaps with the BFF Monica getting a HEA next.

Disclosure - I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.

Spot On

What did you love best about Midnight Sun?

our hero and his Aussie voice/life style

What did you like best about this story?

fast pace listen with a good outline.

What does Erin Mallon bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

this reader is AKA Eva Kaminsky, Sophie Eastlake, Julian Whelan and I do not know how many other names she uses. I am starting to like her E.M. voice/reads as she has a faster pace in the romance/erotica type stories. In these faster reads, she does not get so breathy or turn up the end of her sentences. Her male voices are very good. Her Aussie accent is spot on and you will enjoy this voice very much. She read under Eva Kaminsky, In Plain Site, using again, her very great Aussie accent, check it out. That was a very good and usual story. Enjoy

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

serveral places, where our hero shows, he is not just a snow boarding champ, but mans up.

A very entertaining audiobook

Any additional comments?

Lots of action packed with some romance. One catastrophe after another at the end of the book. I can stop listening to this audiobook because it has soo much action. Get this audiobook, you will not regret.

Roller coaster from the start

I’m not usually one for suspense but I have had this book on my wish list for a while, and needed my Erin Mallon fix so I finally pulled the trigger. So glad I did. This is my first book from this author and I am a fan! Great story. Nonstop action. Accent. Sexy. What else could you ask for!

Entertaiing, Fast Paced Adventure

What made the experience of listening to Midnight Sun the most enjoyable?

The nail-biting excitement and suspense, passion and romance in spite of really challenging situations and the thrilling unexpected terrors, fast and furious, all captured my interest and ensured my rapt attention to the very end.

What did you like best about this story?

Stupendous imagery, entertaining, compelling story. A rakehell and nice girl meet igniting in a one night encounter and the unthinkable for Brylie happens. The plot thickens, when they meet aboard ship and the deadly pirates arrive and trust becomes an issue needing to be resolved for lives, on board, to be saved. Game on!

What about Erin Mallon’s performance did you like?

Erin was masterful as she portrayed the various characters. She was spot on for Brylie's personality, fearful sometimes but brave and courageous nonetheless. Her voice renditions were expressive and made the various situations and personalities come alive.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Brylie's Dad talked to her about running away, and how much he missed being part of a relationship, she realized her need to reconsider her options. She faced herself and made adjustments to her life.

Any additional comments?

In Midnight Sun, MJ Fredrick creates a compelling, dramatic story of love, passion and adventure, in a fast paced setting in the frigid waters and barren landscape of Antarctica.
I appreciated the growth of Marcus' sense of responsibility and growth during this harrowing experience. bad boy rich kid getting to live a real life happening that's guaranteed to change a perspective, positively.
One thing though, I could have done without the description of the gratuitous sex, boring (in the long run), sexually explicit and graphic. However, it was a great read and the story, ripped along so quickly, one couldn't bear to stop listening, until the end. How come, it ended so abruptly? Very disconcerting.....

Fast paced - Great Action & Sexy times!!

Any additional comments?

This book was better than i though it was going to be... I love the first scenes especially when Marcus finds out that Brylie is also the Captains daughter... You can see that there is going to be some really great scenes between them, but I’d never of guessed the amount of action that was about to unfold. This is quite a fasted paced story with great action and some sexy steamy scenes. Most enjoyable and well narrated by Erin Mallon...

Another Book Ruined By This Narrator

This is the second time I listened to this narrator. And the second time she kept me from enjoying an audiobook that was highly rated. She has poor breath control. After almost every sentence or after several words, she takes an annoyingly loud indrawn breath like she is racing through her speaking so fast that she can't breathe. And now the only thing I can remember after an hour of struggling through this book is gasp, gasp, and gasp.
