About this listen
When Carol calls a number she finds in a matchbook, the man promises to answer the mystery of her daughter's death. But he's playing a dangerous game - one she must survive if she's to unravel the truth.
Armed with a fierce wit and determination not even her own shortcomings can derail, Carol faces impossible odds to solve a murder that unraveled her life - her daughter's murder. It's hard enough solving a murder, but throw in homelessness and an obsessed maniac, and it's almost impossible. Almost.
Set on the streets of San Antonio, Matchbook is filled with colorful characters, deep-seated hope, and more than one laugh-out-loud scene. It's a compelling and suspenseful listen that will keep you riveted until the very end.

Story
An intense psychological thriller for fans of I Am Watching You, The Luckiest Girl Alive, and All the Missing Girls. Two missing girls. Thirteen years apart. Olivia Shaw has been missing since last Tuesday. She was last seen outside the entrance of her elementary school in Hunts Point wearing a white spring jacket, blue jeans, and pink boots. I force myself to look at the face in the photo, into her slightly smudged features, and I can't bring myself to move. Olivia Shaw could be my mirror image, rewound to 13 years ago.

NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER!
I was wondering where the author was going with this story when the main character is a homeless drunk and the characters you meet along the way are homeless drunks and drug addicts. By the end of the book I love them all! Everyone of them has a story as to why they are on the streets doing what they do. MUCH LIKE REAL LIFE! The journey the reader takes with Carol keeps you on your toes questioning this character off and on just like the police do. This book has it all... sadness, mystery and humor.

A Fantastic Read
Any additional comments?
I was immediately drawn into this book. The voice of Carol is amusing, clever, sometimes biting and totally unique.
Sometimes you pick up a book and it turns out to be a ride that you won't soon forget. This tale is a mystery for the ages- the characters are so alive they're singing and while I almost always guess the outcomes I wasn't able to anticipate how this one would end. A fantastic read. Would recommend 10/10.

A great mystery with a compelling main character
Carol is a very complex and well written character. She suffers from long-term alcoholism, and it's sometimes difficult to tell delusion from reality. She had a normal life, with a job and SUV and her daughter Ella. But all of that changed when Ella died. Carol is now homeless, spending her days, bouncing between the streets and shelters in a drunken haze, desperately trying to numb her grief.
Her routine of monotony spirals when she finds a matchbook with a phone number, and the voice on the other end, leads her on a quest for truth. Was Ella's death an accidental overdose, or something more sinister?
Trigger warnings for drug and alcohol use, as well as language. There's one character who uses racist and homophobic slurs in one of the chapters. It's not throughout the book, just that one scene but I was glad my kids weren't around when it came on (listened to the audiobook).
I really enjoyed this book, I was hooked from beginning to end. I definitely recommend it. The character is quite relatable for me. And if you choose the audiobook, the voice actress who narrated did a fantastic job.

Good , crazy, and fast paced.
I do not believe I will ever look at a homeless women the same way again.
A nice fast paced book. Sad, yet funny at times.
Its funny how one small thing, a book of matches, can change your life.

Is she or isn't she...?
I really enjoyed this book. Carol sounds like the quintessential unreliable narrator. She is an alcoholic and living on the streets after spending all her money on a P.I. who was supposed to investigate her daughter's death by overdose. She's obsessed with guilt, has been in and out of a mental institution, and is not taking her meds. So how much of what she experiences is real and how much of it is delusional? "Matchbook man" drops clues that her daughter was murdered. Can she believe him, or is he just another figment of her imagination? Carol doesn't know the answer, and the author kept me guessing for a long time. The ending was very satisfying. This is in my "reread" pile!

Way better than the title and book cover
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. I don't know of another book like it. A funny homeless alcoholic woman who may or may not be schizophrenic searching for her daughter's killer. Wow!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Matchbook?
When she decides she may have healed enough to think about getting sober again.
Which scene was your favorite?
Every scene with her friend Maurice who may or may not be real.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It definitely made me laugh but it also really made me think of what it would be like to be homeless. When I've thought about it before, I always concentrated on the despair one must feel but never really thought about the other side to it. That there are often moments of hope and laughter, even in the grimmest of situations.
Any additional comments?
Not crazy about the title or the cover. They made me think this was going to be more of a cozy mystery or even a noir mystery. It had a whole lot more substance to it. I was very engaged with the story and resented when real life made me put it away. Love it when that happens. Narration was fabulous.

A great book that will grab you from the start!
I REALLY liked this book. It grabbed me from the start and I was hooked the entire time. It was the perfect balance of being entertaining, thought provoking, suspenseful and poignant all wrapped into one great story.
I received the Audible version of this book in exchange for an honest review and it was a pleasure to listen to this story. The book is narrated by Becket Royce and she does a fabulous job. Her voice totally fits the personality of Carol and since the book is in first person (Carol’s voice) the audio is a true enhancement to the story.
All in all I totally recommend this book. If you are considering reading it, do! You won’t be disappointed!
