About this listen

During the pandemic, camping was supposed to be a fairly safe activity. That's only if you don't camp with Frannie Shoemaker. Frannie and her husband Larry commit in the fall of 2019 to take on a campground hosting job in the spring of 2020. In that time, the world turned upside down, and their job came with a whole new set of challenges. But of course, where Frannie's involved, other trouble can't be far behind!

A cozy mystery in times of Pandemic

Frannie and Larry took their first campground hosting job for the first time in May 2020, when the Covid Pandemic was still in full swing. Things got then more complicated due to weather inclemencies and a woman that suddenly went missing.

I want to say that this book may not be for everyone due to the circumstances surrounding the mystery. I had indeed mixed feelings about the premises. While we were in strict lockdown in Spain, even with parks closed, people in other countries were allowed to go camping. It just didn’t seem these people lived the same pandemic as we did, and I found some of the attitudes around masking and social distancing a bit disturbing. This doesn’t mean that it was a good book. The story was great but the setting wasn’t probably the right one for me.

The mystery was well built, with some twists and turns and some redeeming events that show us that more often than not, things are not what they seem. I liked the presence of Frannie’s grandchildren, and what they added to the story.

The best part was Michelle Babb’s narration. I always say that Babb could narrate the phone book and make it interesting. She is a natural! Her character interpretations are just amazing, bringing the characters to life in a way that it feels like watching real people interact. Michelle Babb has an expressive and natural narration style that works well with this genre, but I am sure she would do wonders on any other kind of book.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

A well-written, entertaining read

Mask of Death: The Frannie Shoemaker Campground Mysteries, Book 10, my second read from author Karen Musser Nortman. Enjoyable 3-hour 52-minute, 202-page cozy mystery. As a camper, nearing retirement, my wife and I have talked about campground hosting so the book was even morev enjoyable. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. I was impressed and enjoyed the vocal variety & inflections of narrator Michelle Babb. I look forward to reading more in this series & from this author as I get them. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Timely topics and great adventure

I love how Frannie soldiers on, rolls with the punches(weather. and situations) , and comes our swinging . I would have packed up and headed for home- host or not. The fact that she and her gang can still function and act reasonably is a miracle. I liked that the author dealt with real life issues (covid) and did it well regardless of everyone being sick of that issue. It's real and still exists so it's timely and relevant. Kudos for the hutspa to write an unpopular subject. Frannie in a tight spot added to the excitement and suspense. I enjoyed the journey. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. Keep them coming!!
The narrator did an excellent job bringing the characters and story to life.

Campground Hosting Troubles

I enjoyed book 10 of "The Frannie Shoemaker Campground Mysteries" series. Frannie and her husband decided to try being the hosts at a campground, and life was suddenly filled with complications starting with new restrictions due to the pandemic. The trials and tribulations that Frannie and her husband endured and overcame were amazing and varied. Michelle Babb's narration was fabulous, and she managed to keep my attention with her oration. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Interesting cozy

I have to preface this to say this may not be a book for everyone right now.

Frannie and her husband are working has the hosts of a campground during the height of the pandemic. While dealing with the management and upkeep of a campground, they are having to keep their grandchildren because the daughter-in-law is in the hospital with the virus. In the middle of trying to homeschool and keep things positive for the kids they stumble over a dead body.

I was not that bothered by the fact the book takes place during the pandemic. I was still able to enjoy this mystery. I think things are far enough removed that you can relate to this affects the characters without being too raw and real, for me at least. It was interesting to see how campgrounds dealt with keeping people safe. The mystery aspect was well-written with plenty of twists and turns. I didn’t figure out who was behind the attack.

I listened to the audio version of the book. The narrator does a fabulous job bringing the characters to life. She is great at distinguishing each character’s voice and able to bring out the characters’ emotions.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I have not been by anyone.

Camping during the pandemic and dangers!

This is another fun part of The Frannie Shoemaker Campground Mysteries. I have listened to almost all of these audiobooks and I have really enjoyed each one. I think part of it is the camping/RV aspect of it (never done it, but it piques my interest), as well as the characters being a little bit older.

Frannie and her husband are actually in charge of a campground this time around. That's different, but it's not different that Frannie ends up finding danger. This book was also unique in that it takes place during the Covid pandemic and includes all the precautions that we all had to take.

I really like the narration by Michelle Babb for these books. Her voice tends to lend a steadiness to the characters and makes them more down to earth.

I was gifted a copy of this audiobook. All thoughts are my own.

Camping during COVID

This book was so relatable. Our family purchased an RV during COVID and we experienced each of these set backs. The campground playground was closed, the bathrooms and showers were closed. No activities for campers. No sitting around your neighbors fire in the evening toasting marshmallows. But even through it all we enjoyed ourselves and continue to stay at the campground. Luckily we did not see any dead campers. This is a wonderful work of fiction.
