Story
K is madly in love with his best friend, Sumire, but her devotion to a writerly life precludes her from any personal commitments. At least, that is, until she meets an older woman to whom she finds herself irresistibly drawn. When Sumire disappears from an island off the coast of Greece, K is solicited to join the search party—and finds himself drawn back into her world and beset by ominous visions. Subtle and haunting, Sputnik Sweetheart is a profound meditation on human longing.

A welcome surprise: more than 50 prose pieces, gathered together for the first time, by one of America's most revered and admired novelists and short-story writers, whose articles, essays, and cultural commentary - appearing in the New York Review of Books, the New York Times Book Review, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Guardian, Harper's Magazine, and elsewhere - have been parsing the political, artistic, and media idiom for the last three decades.

Story
Exacting yet unpredictable, pithy yet complex, J. M. Coetzee’s The Pole tells the story of Wittold Walccyzkiecz, a vigorous, extravagantly white-haired pianist and interpreter of Chopin who becomes infatuated with Beatriz, a stylish Spanish patron of the arts, after she helps organize his concert in Barcelona. Although Beatriz, a married woman, is initially unimpressed by Wittold and his “gleaming dentures,” she soon finds herself pursued and ineluctably swept into his world.

Story
Claire Keegan continues her outstanding work with this new collection of quietly wrenching stories of despair and desire in modern-day Ireland. A writer awarded a stay to work in Heinrich Böll's old cottage has her peace interrupted by an unwelcome intruder whose ulterior motives emerge as the night progresses. A priest waits at the altar to perform a marriage—and battles his memories of a love affair that led him to question all to which he has dedicated his life. And a man seeks solace at the bottom of a bottle as he mourns both his empty life and his lost love.

Story
Corbin College, not quite upstate New York, winter 1959-1960: Ruben Blum, a Jewish historian—but not an historian of the Jews—is co-opted onto a hiring committee to review the application of an exiled Israeli scholar specializing in the Spanish Inquisition. When Benzion Netanyahu shows up for an interview, family unexpectedly in tow, Blum plays the reluctant host to guests who proceed to lay waste to his American complacencies. Mixing fiction with nonfiction, the campus novel with the lecture, The Netanyahus is a wildly inventive comedy of blending, identity, and politics.

Leah Myers may be the last member of the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe in her family line, due to her tribe's strict blood quantum laws. In this unflinching and intimate memoir, Myers excavates the stories of four generations of women in order to leave a record of her family. Beginning with her great-grandmother, the last full-blooded Native member in their lineage, she connects each woman with her totem to construct her family's totem pole: protective Bear, defiant Salmon, compassionate Hummingbird, and perched on top, Raven.

Mr. Palomar, whose name purposely evokes that of the famous telescope, is a seeker after knowledge, a visionary in a world sublime and ridiculous. Whether contemplating a cheese, a woman's breasts, or a gorilla's behavior, he brings us a vision of a world familiar by consensus, fragmented by the burden of individual perception.

Just After Sunset - call it dusk, call it twilight, it's a time when human intercourse takes on an unnatural cast, when nothing is quite as it appears, when the imagination begins to reach for shadows as they dissipate to darkness and living daylight can be scared right out of you. It's the perfect time for Stephen King.

It begins as a statistical oddity: a spike in children born with acute speech delays. Physically normal in every way, these children never speak and do not respond to speech; they don't learn to read, don't learn to write. As the number of cases grows to an epidemic level, theories spread. Maybe it's related to a popular antidepressant; maybe it's environmental. Story
Lyra's story begins in the Haven Institute, a building tucked away on a private island off the coast of Florida that from a distance looks serene and even beautiful. But up close, the locked doors, military guards, and biohazard suits tell a different story. In truth Haven is a clandestine research facility where thousands of replicas, or human models, are born, raised, and observed. When a surprise attack is launched on Haven, two of its young experimental subjects - Lyra, or 24, and the boy known only as 72 - manage to escape.

Story
When farmers cutting turf in an Irish peat bog make a grisly discovery, the perfectly intact body of a young woman with long red hair, archaeologist Cormac O'Callaghan and pathologist Nora Gavin are thrown together by their shared scientific interest in human remains. Because of the preservative effect of the bog, it is difficult to tell whether the body has lain there for two decades, two centuries, or two millennia.

Story
Few authors write with such sheer love of story and language as T. C. Boyle, and that is nowhere more evident than in his inventive, wickedly funny, and always entertaining short stories. Here are 14 new tales previously unpublished in book form. By turns mythic and realistic, farcical and tragic, ironic and moving, Boyle's stories have mapped a wide range of human emotions. The stories here reflect his maturing themes.

The story is amazing
This novel had me sitting at the edge of my seat as I listened to it each day on my way to work and home. I found the drive passing so much faster with this little gem of a science fiction novel, but it has a lot of true events in it which make it interesting in another facet. Overall, I wouldn’t mind listening to this again in a year or two.

disappointing
After reading "The History of Love", I keep diving into other Nicole Krauss novels hoping for something that even comes close to that brilliant piece of writing but unfortunately finding that my disappointment gets greater each time.

Disappointed--really wanted to care
What would have made Man Walks Into a Room better?
The story's main problem is that it never managed to convince me why I should care. Care for the story or the characters. I found myself screaming at the ceiling of my car while listening ("Are you serious?!!" or "You've got to be joking?!!") in disbelieve at how bored I was at times or at how irrelevant things seemed.
What could Nicole Krauss have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The writer seemed unaware or not yet able to image what a reader needs to stay interested or connected to her characters and to the story. I absolutely LOVED (LOVED!!!!) The History of Love. Seems like she's grown tremendously as a writer to be able to pull off History but fail so utterly in her first attempt.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Man Walks Into a Room?
The final chapter!!! Did not understand why Krauss thought I would be interested in that. Really odd and out of touch choice.

Great story idea, poor execution
Would you try another book from Nicole Krauss and/or Richard Poe?
I absolutely loved The History of Love, Nicole Krauss' later novel. It was so beautifully written, poetic, touching, interesting. This book, however, is a huge disappointment. The writing is juvenile, awkward, and forced. The plot line and characters are weak. And the narrator does a very poor job, especially with dialogue. His voice is breathy and trails off at the end of each sentence. He is overly dramatic. His style reminds me of a 1950's radio show narration.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The redeeming quality of this novel is simply that it's based around a fantastic concept, which should be a seed for a well cultivated story, but rather it's left to dry out and disappoint.
Any additional comments?
Waste of a credit.
