About this listen

The pioneer of romantic suspense, Mary Stewart, leads listeners on a thrilling journey through a dangerous and deadly Provence in this tale perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and Barbara Pym.

It sounds idyllic: a leisurely drive through the sun-drenched landscape of Provence. But Charity's dream holiday turns into a nightmare when she becomes embroiled in a sinister plot to kidnap a young boy. She soon finds herself in a deadly pursuit and must uncover whom to trust...and whom to fall for.

Whenever I look back now on the strange and terrifying events of that holiday in Southern France, I remember the minutes I spent gazing at the golden arches of the Roman aqueduct over the Gardon...the last brief lull before the thunder.

Dated, but worth listening

I've been a fan of Mary Stewart for several decades, read all her books back in the 70s, and re-read them a couple of times after that. I bought this for the nostalgia, and initially wasn't sure I'd like this. But it's entirely a good, old-school romantic thriller, and the narrator's voice soon becomes *just right* for the story.

Emilia Fox is always a great narrator

Loved this book for many years now, and the narrator didn't disappoint. She never does.

A wonderful story of romance and suspense

Mary Stewart has long been a favorite of mine, and this perfectly narrated version is one I will listen to again and again.
Who doesn’t love Charity driving as her Johnny taught her through the countryside of France!
I give it five stars.

Great overall!

This book was so good! Loved the suspense, the relationships and the way she ties the story together. There are parts where I feel her descriptions of the ocean or scenery trail on a bit but overall it’s a great book!

Another terrific thriller from Mary Stewart

A little slow at start: the detailed descriptions of scenery and surroundings may put some readers off. I’ve read most of her books and know it’s always worth it.

Another wonderful book

Mary Stewart books are filled with details. She so vividly describes the places in which her books are set. So full of possibilities. I reread or listen to my favorites every few years.

Favorite Stewart

It’s hard for me to pick one favorite from Mary Stewart, but I think this is it. Her first book; there’s something special about it that isn’t replicated with the others.

As far as narration goes, I really enjoyed it. Emilia Fox did an excellent job!

Perfect!

I have purchased almost 40 Audible books at this point. This Audible version of The Moonspinners and the version of Madam Will You Talk are the very best in terms of the voice matching the character of the heroine and overall delivery. I love them! I wish I could say the same for every Audible book - particularily some of the Georgette Heyer Audibles. Some of those I have abandoned early on. I highly recommend the Audible for The Moonspinners and Madame Will You Talk.

Gripping suspense!

I was riveted! Emilia Fox's narration was excellent. I was unfamiliar with the story and it took about 5 minutes for me to get into it. Then I was hooked. This is an excellent suspense story read beautifully. My heart pounded! One of my best Audible purchases.
