Ici, cela va de soi, ils n'ont plus rien ; tout appartient aux autres, et ils se sont installés à trois et quatre familles par isba, en sorte que, dans chacune, il n'y a pas moins de quinze personnes des deux sexes, sans compter les enfants. Au total, ils n'ont rien à manger ; c'est la famine, une épidémie générale de typhus de l'épuisement ou du typhus exanthématique, et, littéralement, tous sont malades."
Ma femme est une nouvelle d'Anton Tchekhov publiée pour la première fois dans la revue Le Messager du Nord. Le retraité Pavel vit dans sa maison avec sa femme, Natalia, lui vivant à l'étage, elle au rez-de-chaussée. Ils ne se parlent pas, ou seulement quand ils se croisent dans le vestibule. Vingt ans d'écart et des caractères opposés font quelle le déteste et lui est indifférent. Cependant, une mauvaise récolte afflige la Russie, et Natalia organise tout pour venir en aide aux paysans. Pavel se mêle à la cause, au grand désespoir de sa femme.
Anton Pavlovitch Tchekhov (1860-1904) était un médecin et écrivain russe, qui est principalement connu pour ses nouvelles et ses pièces de théâtre réalistes telles La Mouette (1896), Oncle Vania (1897) et La Cerisaie (1904). Un contemporain de Zola, Tolstoï et Bounine, l'œuvre de Tchekhov couvre un large éventail de sujets. On y trouve tant une critique de la société et une étude de la psychologie humaine, que des histoires comiques et légères, d'autres optimistes, et d'autres encore joliment lyriques. Chez Tchekhov, il n'y a jamais de jugements ou de préjugés, seulement une narration simple et un refus des intrigues traditionnelles, faisant que son style se distingue clairement de celui de ses contemporains. Il obtint en 1888 le prestigieux prix Pouchkine pour son œuvre La Steppe et a depuis été traduit dans de nombreuses langues.
