About this listen

Influenza swept the planet. In months, two billion were dead. In the decimated United States, President Andrew Thomas signed an Executive Order to spray the national food and water supply with a flu vaccine. It spread and mutated up the food chain. The infected craved the flesh of the living and the undead walked the earth.

Overnight, Emily Gray's privileged world was ripped away. From pampered trophy wife to sharpshooter zombie hunter. From an elite address in San Francisco to the outskirts of an East Bay farm town. You never know what event will define you. The apocalypse showed Emily what she was truly capable of doing to survive.

Seth Ripley was a truck driver with simple dreams. Pay off his mortgage, not live paycheck to paycheck, and take care of his mom. The end of the world as he knew it stole all that away. His home and livelihood are gone and the only dream he has left is for his mother to awake from her diabetic coma brought on from the trials and tribulations of getting out of Oakland ahead of the horde of undead.

When surviving day to day is all you ask of life, love seems an unrealistic dream. Who would ever think that something as terrible as the zombie apocalypse could bring Seth and Emily something as wonderful as their other half, their soul mate, their true love?

Now all they have to do is survive death, destruction, and a madman who wants to control what is left of the world they knew.

A story of people, love and survival.

An influenza pandemic eliminates two billion lives from the planet. The U.S. President attempts to slow the death rate by introducing a vaccine into the food and water supply. The solution backfires of course and the dead begin to rise. Emily Gray and Seth Ripley are normal everyday people looking to survive the apocalypse. Their paths cross and a relationship ensues. The story focuses on this pair, chronicles how the relationship changes their lives and compares the new to the old. We also have a General Peters who remarkably can control the zombies to some degree via sound waves. An interesting twist and adds a little to the plot. It’s a story of people, love and survival. The sexual encounters may be a bit overdone, but does not completely distract. Not too bad; three.point.five for the effort.

Interesting

Any additional comments?

I've listened to a lot of zombie books, so thought I'd give this one a try. It is full of action and kept me listening just to find out what would happen next. The narrator was okay, but the book would have been a lot better with a female narrator.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Great Story

I really enjoyed this book. From start to finish, I was constantly on edge, wondering what could go wrong and what would go right. There were several intense moments when I wondered if this was old school where the good guys win or new age where it just ends without resolution.

As for the narration, I only had one complaint. Most of the time I could tell the difference between male and female dialogue, but there were instances of conversation where that was more difficult. In the audio book format, if this isn't covered by the writing it really should be a distinct transition. Otherwise, it was very fitting.

Excellent Addition !

I was given an audible code for free to give an honest opinion on this book.
I am an avid audible listener and have over 100 books in my library. This book is a great addition to my audible library of Zombie books. The author changed an everyday zombie book into something totally different. She threw twists in at every turn, which kept the book interesting . There is action, death by zombie, love, and much much more.
The characters were well thought out and well developed. i will be spending my own money for books 2 and 3 in this series.

The narrator did a great job with the narration of this book. He really brought the characters to life and made them 3 dimensional. iI would love to fight along side Emily during the zombie invading force.

Great Job!

I've found a new series!!!

Any additional comments?

I've listened to a few zombie books but the majority I just cannot get through. This listen was an exception. From the very first paragraph, I knew I was getting something special and different. And it was a gift that kept on giving.

The introduction to the listen was a little off-putting. The first character introduced was a woman talking about how her cheating husband lost his privates during some illicit time with a soon-to-turn zombie woman. Hearing that narration with a male voice made me scratch my head, but only for a moment. The flow of the story, the smooth narration, and the character development was so perfect that all I cared about was what happened next.

And the what happened next WAS AWESOME. No spoliers here; just know that this is one of the best zombie stories I've ever listened to. The relationships that developed in this world felt real. The requisite bad guy was so, so, so bad. And the HEA, albeit most likely short lived, was incredibly hard fought.

The narrator was excellent! I loved his smooth delivery and the way he brought you into the story. I think the choice of this male narrator, even when voicing females, had the perfect synergy. A female voice would not have done this listen justice.

I am so excited that there is, or will be, a book two. I want back on this ride!

Good book but...

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend reading the book, but will shy away from recommending the audible version. The narrator was so nasally that it was so distracting. Especially when the main character was a female, the nasally narration just kills any imagination for her.

What other book might you compare Love in the Time of Zombies to and why?

The closes book that comes to mind would be Z-Burbia, but that is not a fair comparison because the narration and the story fit perfectly in Z-Burbia.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

One word, nasally.

Did Love in the Time of Zombies inspire you to do anything?

No, the story was good enough for me to finish, would have been better if the narrator was a female.

Any additional comments?

This was such a mix bag of feelings for me. I enjoy all zombies genre especially the one that is not conventional. For instance, Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion, love that book and thought the movie was well done. I was hoping this was one of those book, it came close but the narrator really detracted my attention from enjoying the book.

Zombies..

Any additional comments?

Due to an Influenza epidemic, the President decides to spray the food and water with a

"Cure".

However, things quickly change when the cure doesn't actually cure the Influenza

outbreak but rather creates a whole new problem.

The story centers around Emily, the female lead, and Seth, the male lead, who meet within

a short period of time after the "outbreak".

The story line is well developed, has a steady pace, with a few twists / turns, throw in a few

rogue zombies and the author has created a decent story line.

Overall, an Interesting and Entertaining read and I am interested in reading or listening to

the next book in the series.

Maxwell Zener did well with the narration

I rated the book 3 stars and the narration 4 stars.

Zombies and Love?

Yep, It’s a story about zombies and love, I know, I know mention the word love or romance and some zombie book aficionados, hold their nose and run off like… well… a zombie hoard was at their doorstep!

If you’re one of those I’m here to tell you that you’re missing out on one great audiobook. This book has everything you expect from a great zombie listen, graphic descriptions of the horrifying carnage wrought by zombies, exposing the flaws of man under stress causing the rise to power of wicked men and a team of kick ass heroes who won’t go gentle into that good night.

A virulent strain of influenza is wreaking havoc on the world population and a grieving, US President orders the vaccine to be sprayed into the water and food supply, a great way to throw gasoline on the fire Pres!

Soon the dead are rising and two people from disparate lifestyles before the zombie apocalypse, Emily Gray an unhappy trophy wife and Seth Ripley a long distance truck driver discovers they have what it takes to survive in this harsh new world.

I enjoyed Jill James’ writing style and there were small sprinkles of humor at just the right times and I always appreciate that especially in this genre.

The audiobook is narrated Maxwell Zener and this is the first audiobook that I’ve listened to from him and he does a wonderful job voicing most of the characters in the story, sometimes though I did lose track of which character was narrating the scene, there wasn’t enough variation in tone for my ears between Emily’s character and Seth’s. That aside, I wouldn’t hesitate to listen to another audiobook with him as a reader.

Any additional comments?

Maybe my expectations were too high, but it didn't hold my attention. Although it was not as good as I expected, I finished listening to this audiobook.
