En la quinta parte de esta serie de la prehistoria los protagonistas, Ayla y Jondalar, llegan finalmente a un hogar.

Los zelandonii sienten fascinación por las nuevas ideas que aporta la joven pareja pero también se muestran recelosos. Les llaman especialmente la atención el lanzavenablos, una nueva arma de caza muy eficaz, así como el rápido método de encender fuego con pedernal y pirita de hierro.
Sin embargo, el lobo domesticado y el acento extraño de Ayla causan reticencia. Pero, gracias a sus habilidades curativas, su inteligencia y su sabiduría, logra ser aceptada, formaliza su relación con Jondalar y encuentra en la líder espiritual de la Novena Caverna una nueva compañera con quien compartir sus conocimientos.
