En más de una década de trabajo como corresponsal extranjero en América Latina, había recibido numerosos libros de ex jefes de Estado. Por lo general eran verdaderos ladrillos: obras escritas en lenguaje pomposo y destinadas a justificar, o glorificar, actos de gobierno de los cuales ya nadie se acordaba. Y este que me había regalado López Michelsen, para colmo, tenía una fecha de primera edición de 1952, cuando yo, según mis cálculos, debía estar haciendo la transición de los pañales al tollet training. Y sus 321 páginas estaban adquiriendo un color amarillento que asustaba a cualquiera.
