Las personas que realizan actos obsesivos o desarrollan un ceremonial pertenecen, junto con aquellas que sufren de representaciones o impulsos obsesivos, a una unidad clínica especial, designada habitualmente con el nombre de neurosis obsesiva. Mas no ha de pretenderse derivar de tal denominación la peculiaridad de esta dolencia, pues en rigor también otrosdistintos fenómenos psicopatológicos presentan el llamado carácter obsesivo. En lugar de una definición hemos de ofrecer aún, por ahora, el conocimiento detallado de dichos estados, ya que no se ha logrado todavía descubrir el carácter distintivo de la neurosis obsesiva, el cual yace probablemente en estratos muy profundos, aun cuando su existenciaparece evidenciarse en todas las manifestaciones de la enfermedad.
