About this listen

Back by popular demand: The first novel in the romantic Orphan Train trilogy, Lily and the Major. It's the beloved historical classic about a woman who must choose between her family and her one true love, by number-one New York Times best-selling author Linda Lael Miller.

In his arms, she discovered how tender - and how bold - true passion could be....

Lily Chalmers wanted only two things from life: a farm of her own, and to find the sisters she hadn't seen since they were all little girls heading west on the orphan train. She certainly had no desire for a husband. Yet proud, innocent Lily had no idea what desire meant until she met Major Caleb Halliday, a man who could ignite her very being with a single touch.... a glance.... a whisper.

Sheltered in his arms, Lily rode the crest of a wild, helpless passion. And though she struggled against her own willful heart, she knew she could never choose between the dazzling man who had claimed her love so completely, and her bold, long-cherished dream.

Had to give up on this one

I still have five chapters to go, but alas... I can no longer endure the escalation in her childish behavior. When she shot at his wagon without having any experience with a gun the story completely lost me. The characters act worse and worse as the story continues and I don’t have any more time to give.

I understood Lily’s selfishness in the beginning, however her excuses can only go so far. It was fun for the first half until it turned ridiculous and had me constantly cringing.

Wearing female story line

So, I get it. Both lead characters are stubborn and the author’s spin was to convey submission via constant sex to drive out stubbornness in the female. However, I believe the author took it too far- to the point of female lead becoming foolish and silly....doing a disservice to the character that NEVER comes to a place of softening. I was worn out listening to her fool-Harding behavior. Just wanted the story to end so I could move on.

A Long Journey

This is the first audible I have listen to by this author. Overall the story was excellent. The start of a story of three young girls who were put on the Orphan train due to their mother wanting to get rid of them due to her latest "man".
Heartbreaking as this one follows the youngest Lily who is taken in by a family who only wanted her to be a playmate to their young daughter who "picked her out".
Years later Lily is on her own and wants only a piece of land and to find her two sisters since they were all separated. But then she meets and is overwhelmed by Major Caleb Halliday and she finds passion but stays focused on her goal.
I did get really aggravated with Lily pushing Caleb away at every chance, but she was really damaged due to her mother.
A long journey ensures but a lot happens along the way...

Not to be missed. I enjoyed the narrator although I had to speed up the vocals a little which sounded perfect... Excited to hear Emma's story next!

She’s head strong and he’s in the Army

I must have read this book for the first time 30 or more years ago. It stayed with me that long. I then thought listening to the series would give it a different perspective. Linda Lael Miller is such a great writer. Poor Lily, Emma & Caroline are put on the orphan train by her mother, the train headed west from Chicago. Each sister was taken in by someone at different stops. Lily is determined to find her sisters and plans to stay in one place like she was taught if she got lost!!! She didn't intend to find a strong headed Major in the army and fall in love!!! They butt heads thru out the book but eventual love can't keep them at bay!!! A wonderful book about the bonds of sisters, friendship and love!!!

Three little girls

Great book. A time I thought Lily stubbornness would be the undoing of her she came thru. The major loving her had to protect her. Great match.

Wowzers

100% epitome of a lusty, dusty, trashy romance novel. Descriptive like no other of hers!

This Heroine Creates Her Own Drana

When the heroine is still clueless with 3 hours left in the book… it sure feels like a waste of time to have listened to this one.

struggling with the characters

the storyline is fun, but I struggled to like the characters. Both main characters are overly stubborn & disrespectful of one another. Granted, I understand how or why their past experiences would make them broken, but I found myself exhausted listening to their persistent mela-dramatic power struggles.
