About this listen

Jack Fleming was an investigative journalist in Prohibition-era Chicago until he got shot by an unknown assassin, bitten by his vampire girlfriend, and then became one of the undead. Now, this nice-guy nosferatu has a bunch of crazy vampire hunters on his trail, armed with crosses, silver bullets, and sharp wooden stakes.

He doesn't know how they found out about him or why they are "out for his blood," but it's not a problem for this street-wise gumshoe, until someone starts shooting. Jack himself may be bulletproof, but his friends are not. And Jack is determined to get some answers, even if it kills him - again. It's a case of the living versus the undead. But who's hunting whom?

Critic reviews

"Elrod s got it down. A blend of the hard-boiled detective novel and the vampire tale...good-natured fun." ( Locus)

Another great story!

Loved the continued story line. I will definitely see if there are more. Love the old time detective feel with the vampire twist.

Modern clichés, Hanging bits

Did they say, "Scared the s*** out of me," in 1936? That and at least one other modern cliché phrase threw me out of the story.
What happened with Malcolm? What did they do with the dirt and the van whatever that it was in? I had to go back and relisten to realize that the information wasn't actually presented. I'm sure I was supposed to presume activities but I didn't feel like there had been enough information.

Better than reading it

I started reading this series in the 90's. I still have the first 5 books in paperback. I love that I can listen to this series now while I do other things. If you haven't read the series and you like Chicago history I think you will enjoy these stories.

This series definitely gets better as it continues

Both the story & the narration gets better, in this second installment, as things become more immersed in the story. In the first book Barrett Whitener's narration starts out very bland & monotone but as things move along his voice animation improves & the story comes to the forefront.
I would definitely listen to the next adventure in this series.

So enjoying this series

I was turned on to this series from a short story. I like the variation of just enough supernatural to make it believable. I'm especially glad that I can binge to catch up! Onward!

Hooked again!

Really enjoyed the second book of the series, even the narrator didn't grate on my nerves as bad as he did the first book. You find yourself wanting to hear more. Good story and plot line!

Boy Scout Jack!

The time is September 1936. Jonathan “Jack” Flemming and his friend Escott continued to dig further into Jack’s murder. Jack’s five-year-old quest was to find his master, Maureen. In the meantime, Jack had begun a relationship with the Chicago nightclub singer Bobbie Smithe. Unfortunately, Jack had people looking for him from New York. Along with those problems, certain types of people noticed discrepancies that drew attention to him. Jack being new to his condition wasn’t as proficient in being incognito as he should have been. His master, Maureen had disappeared, never to teach him what to do or how to survive. Sometimes I think Jack is such an idiot. His boy scout attitude created more problems than necessary. An interesting tale to be sure. It could be worth following through.

Left me wanting more...

Any additional comments?

I've wanted to get into P. N. Elrod for awhile since she has been involved with the same various collections of short stories that one of my favorite authors (Jim Butcher!!) contributes to as well. I'm very glad I took the chance and gave this series a listen! Think old style black and white private investigator with a supernatural twist. I don't want to spoil any of the story line but I was so taken in by the main character and his very human side kick that the ending left me hooked NEEDING to find out what happens next. The series continues by another narrator but is just as good. I do wish the books were longer (each is only 6-7 hours in length) but so far well worth the credit.

Good book, excellent narrator.

This isn't my favorite book in the series, but with Barrett Whitener narrating, I was fully enwrapped in the story. It broadens the world of P.N. Elrod's vampires, and tells a good story. The mystery wasn't quite as effective as the first book, but it was still thoroughly enjoyable.
