Harleys Earl’s story qualifies as a bona fide American family saga. It began in the Michigan pine forest in the years after the Civil War, traveled across the Great Plains on the wheels of a covered wagon, and eventually settled in Hollywood, California.

But beginning in the 1980s, the Bassett company suffered from an influx of cheap Chinese furniture as the first waves of Asian competition hit, and ultimately was forced to send its production offshore to Asia. Only one man fought back. That man is John Bassett III, a descendant of the Bassetts who is now chairman of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co, which employs more than 700 Virginians and has sales of over $90 million.

Story
The early 1970s saw the birth of the modern comic book shop. Its rise was due in large part to a dynamic entrepreneur, Phil Seuling. His direct market model allowed shops to get comics straight from the publishers, bypassing middlemen. Stores could better customize their offerings and independent publishers could now access national distribution. In this way, shops opened up a space for quirky ideas to gain an audience and helped transform small-press series, from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Bone, into media giants.

A Narrator to Look For, Alex Robertson
What did you like best about Life, Love and Adventure!? What did you like least?
Mr. Halpern's life was very interesting and diverse. I wish he would have gone into more detail about the Depression and the war. I found it very interesting to hear how ration books worked. I would have liked more information about his brother and how the war affected him. There were things in the book that interfered with the flow (like listing all the addresses to places and lists of people's names that didn't add to the story).
Who was your favorite character and why?
This book was about Mr. Halpern's life, so he is the main character. I liked hearing about how he helped people with mental disabilities find fulfilling work. Mr. Halpern is a man a of vision and drive to make things happen. I liked this part of his story. Mr. Halpern is a great problem solver and creative thinker.
Which character – as performed by Alex Robertson – was your favorite?
This book is mainly about one character, Mr. Halpern. At times, the author writes as if he is talking directly to the listener or reader. Alex Robertson's narration of this was spot on. I felt Mr. Robertson was speaking directly to me with encouraging words to make my life as good as it could be.
Could you see Life, Love and Adventure! being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I think Mr. Halpern lived a very interesting life. He had some very interesting things to say. I think his book could have been improved by having someone edit his work.
Any additional comments?
The narration by Alex Robertson was fantastic! It is easy to tell this is a very trained voice, which was relaxing and soothing to me. Mr. Robertson would be an excellent children's books reader (I'm a former grade school librarian, so I appreciate great narration.). I hope this narrator does more books, I will be looking for his name.

Inspiring and enlightening!
Sometimes your life needs a jumpstart, and it's clear the Halperns have got a great handle on how to get the most from every day. What a remarkable story! It can be hard to be honest when evaluating your own approach to life, but only the tough journeys are worth taking, right? And the narration is one of the best I've heard. Soothing, even hypnotizing! It really lends an extra layer of conviction to the narrative. Big thumbs up all around!
