Berlijn, 1929. Als het Waldfriede-ziekenhuis eindelijk naam heeft gemaakt dreigt de toekomst er radicaal anders uit te gaan zien. Nu een nieuwe golf van werkloosheid en armoede plaatsvindt vallen mensen makkelijk voor de beloftes van de nationaalsocialisten. Directeur Louis Conradi voelt de veranderingen aan en houdt de sympathie voor de partij angstvallig in de gaten. De constante zorgen eisen hun tol: Conradi's gezondheid gaat hard achteruit, maar hij moet zich sterk houden voor zijn patiënten en zijn personeel. En dus houdt hij zijn kwalen geheim, zelfs voor Hanna.
De komst van de jonge verpleegster Lilly Wegner is een frisse wind door het ziekenhuis, zeker als er iets moois opbloeit tussen haar en dokter Rudolph Kirsch. Maar hun liefde wordt al snel overschaduwd door angst: Kirsch is Joods.
