About this listen

Hugo's vibrant portrait of the characters in late 18th century Paris is a world-famous story, which has also been made into an award-winning musical. Jean Valjean, an ex-convict, tries to turn his life around for the sake of his adopted daughter, Cosette.

Set in turbulent times, this reading by Michael Jayston of this classic tale is a bustling and thrilling trip for a listener through the streets and cafes of a Paris finding its feet and losing its head.

Reading Les Mis with youth

Would you listen to Les Miserables again? Why?

Yes, because I love the story and so do they, but I will definitely know where to skip over in the future

What was one of the most memorable moments of Les Miserables?

The very end. It makes my heart ache.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This story takes me on a roller coaster of emotions. It's horrible and wonderful all at the same time. My children were also affected, though not nearly as much.

Any additional comments?

I was hoping this edition would be suitable for my 11-13 year olds, but there are parts that I definitely had to skip over- specifically Fantine's downfall. That was a little bit disappointing, but I still would have purchased it and skipped over it as I have done.

A must listen before you enjoy the play or movie

Would you listen to Les Miserables again? Why?

I understood the entire story much better because I listened to the audiobook - therefore the play was even more enjoyable.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Les Miserables?

When the priest gave him the candlesticks and the immediate events that followed.

What about Michael Jayston’s performance did you like?

His talent adds such emotion to the story. I doubt that anyone could have done either.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
