Publisher's summary

A small-town attorney takes on prejudice and corruption in this powerful legal thriller.

Small-town lawyer Bocephus Haynes comes home late one night to find District Attorney General Helen Lewis waiting for him. Her ex-husband has just been killed. She’s about to be arrested for his murder. And she wants Bo to represent her.

There’s a lot working against them. Just before his death, Helen’s ex-husband threatened to reveal a dark secret from her past. Bo has been in a tailspin since his wife’s death. What’s more, his whole life has been defined by a crime committed against his family, and he continues to face prejudice as the only African American litigator in Pulaski, Tennessee.

Bo’s back is against the wall, and Helen resigns herself to a dismal fate - but a stunning discovery throws everything into chaos. There’s a chance for justice, but to achieve it, the cost might be too much for Bo to bear.

Great plot twists in this legal thriller!

LEGACY OF LIES is Book 1 in the Bocephus (Bo) Haynes series but Bocephus Haynes was a major character in the McMurtie & Drake series by Robert Bailey. The location of the courtroom action moves from Alabama to Tennessee with this new series. I seldom complain about a publisher's summary giving away too much of a plot, but in this case it does. I suggest skipping the publisher's summary. The Bo Haynes character was well developed in the prior series. Eric G. Dove continues to narrate Robert Bailey's novels. He does a great job.

This is one of my favorite character studies. Robert Bailey is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

Would be a great Movie! Jaw dropping twist!

Loved to see the characters grow as well as the growth of the friendships among the characters. I LOVE a good figure it out twist and can typically figure the twist out BUT NO I didn’t see it coming and my jaw literally dropped! I would love to be his free grammar editor! Talk about getting engrossed in your job. I could ramble on about how great this book is but, this 2nd book in this serious is waiting my library to start!

Bocephus is a winner!

loved it. love the surprise ending. i was uncomfortable abt Bo threatening a charge of racism as a manipulative tool in the car dealership. racism is real and painful; so many have been hurt by it. rather the author writes a scene in as true than a scene of Bo crying wolf in that case even if the target was the bad guy.

can't do 5 for corruption

it took me several reruns to finish this book. The plot was not at all predictable. agreeing (via stars) would make me complicit with corruption. If you don't care it was well written.

Bailey - Simply Outstanding

This story was great and got my attention on page 1. It's the third book I've read from this author and not one book has disappointed me. He balances the development of the characters with moving the story along at a good pace. The narration was good as well. If you like police procedural and suspense, this book is for you.

good story; terrible performance

having lived for many years in Tennessee, I found the fake southern accent poorly done. The poor research resulted in inauthentic language, pronunciations and colloquialisms. Even the pronunciation of the town where the main character supposedly lived was not that of a local. the story was quite good and pretty well told, but the performance kept getting in the way.
