À l'initiative de l'Empire ildiran, un grand vaisseau part explorer ce qui s'étend au-delà du Bras spiral. Là, il découvre une nébuleuse mystérieuse et sinistre, si opaque que même la lumière stellaire ne peut la pénétrer... Une nébuleuse qui, sous le regard horrifié des explorateurs, commence à grossir et à s'étirer.
Les espèces du Bras spiral découvrent bientôt qu'un mal si ancien qu'il a été oublié les terrorise... une entité si puissante que l'existence même de toutes les créatures vivantes se retrouve en danger.
