Seine besondere Freude und sein Stolz aber war der große Garten vor dem Eingang zu seiner unterirdischen Kristallburg, in dem unzählige edle Rosen blühten und dufteten. Wehe aber dem, der es gewagt hätte, auch nur eine dieser Rosen zu pflücken: ihm hätte Laurin die linke Hand und den rechten Fuß genommen! Dieselbe Strafe wäre auch dem widerfahren, der den Seidenfaden zerrissen hätte, der den ganzen Rosengarten anstatt eines Zaunes umspannte.
