Acerca de esta escucha
Enjoy the warmth, spirit, and adventure of Kauai in 50 inspiring, humorous, and touching personal stories told by the island's people.
Dance hula with an award-winning hula instructor who helps keep this cultural tradition alive. Make salt the traditional way Hawaiians have been making salt for centuries.
Discover the aloha spirit of Kauai's people through their stories of growing up island-style, living in multicultural sugar plantation camps; going barefoot until high school and making toys with whatever was on hand, like Frisbees from car-flattened, sun-dried toads.
Smile at humorous tales of acceptance and affection for members of the island's wild chicken population.
Get to know patriotic Japanese-American soldiers born on Kauai as they fight for the United States in World War II against Japan, the country of their parents' birth.
Journey with Kauai people who have sailed thousands of miles across oceans in a voyaging canoe, navigating only by the stars, moon, sun, and waves as their ancestors did when they discovered Hawaii more than 1,500 years ago.
Feel the ocean spray as Kauai residents share their love of surfing, canoe paddling, and strolling along secluded sandy beaches, often making the only footsteps in the sand.

In this honest, layered and unforgettable book that alternates between storytelling and her own poetry, Pamela Anderson breaks the mold of the celebrity memoir while taking back the tale that has been crafted about her. Her blond bombshell image was ubiquitous in the 1990s. Discovered in the stands of a football game, she was immediately rocket launched into fame, becoming Playboy’s favorite cover girl and an emblem of Hollywood glamour and sexuality. But what happens when you lose grip on your own life—and the image the notoriety machine creates for you is not who you really are?

Born and raised in Hawai‘i by a father whose ancestors are indigenous to the land and a mother from the American South, Jessica Machado wrestles with what it means to be “local.” Feeling separate from the history and tenets of Hawaiian culture that have been buried under the continental imports of malls and MTV, Jessica often sees her homeland reflected back to her from the tourist perspective—as an uncomplicated paradise. Her existence, however, feels far from that ideal. Balancing her parents’ divorce, an ailing mother, and growing anxiety, Jessica rebels.

Historia
On November 18, 1967, Private First Class Davis' artillery unit was hit by a massive enemy offensive. At 21 years old, he resolved to face the onslaught and prepared to die. Soon he would have a perforated kidney, crushed ribs, a broken vertebra, his flesh ripped by beehive darts, a bullet in his thigh, and burns all over his body. Ignoring his injuries, he manned a two-ton Howitzer by himself, crossed a canal under heavy fire to rescue three wounded American soldiers, and kept fighting until the enemy retreated.

Hailed as a masterpiece of American travel writing, Blue Highways is an unforgettable journey along our nation's backroads. William Least Heat-Moon set out with little more than the need to put home behind him and a sense of curiosity about "those little towns that get on the map-if they get on at all-only because some cartographer has a blank space to fill: Remote, Oregon; Simplicity, Virginia; New Freedom, Pennsylvania; New Hope, Tennessee; Why, Arizona; Whynot, Mississippi." His adventures, his discoveries, and his recollections of the extraordinary people he encountered along the way amount to a revelation of the true American experience.

It was early evening and a new acquaintance had come to retrieve his daughter from a play date. Instead of driving up in a minivan, he arrived by water, tacking his sailboat smartly across a squiggly channel in the marsh, throwing a rope overboard, and zipping back home, his gleeful daughter riding in the wake. Who knew you could do such a thing? And how could you resist befriending a man such as that?

Historia
John Marshall had read about the growth of voluntourism, and frankly, it was the only kind of extended trip he could afford. He'd heard that some peoples' lives were changed by a week of overseas service - what might half a year accomplish for his family? His wife, Traca, was all in favor of it; his kids, especially his 14-year-old daughter, were strongly opposed. Wide-Open World is the totally engaging, bluntly honest story of the Marshall family's life-changing adventure.

Beautiful intriguing stories but...
This was a wonderful book! But, the one older female narrator clicked her saliva so many times it made me cringe. She needs to drink more water because it’s sounds so amateur and many people are very sensitive to saliva noises. Otherwise this book was perfect—though her parts were like fingernails on a chalkboard. An editor can take her saliva noises out and you’ll have a far more successful book. I loved ALL THE STORIES!!

Terrible
The performance of this reading was so bad. Voices were irritating to listen to. I was hoping to learn some fun things about Kaua’i but couldn’t listen anymore, turned it off and wished I could return the book.
