About this listen

“A chilling novel showcasing Claire Douglas's trademark brilliantly claustrophobic settings and tightly plotted twists. Impossible to know which of the well-drawn characters to trust and very hard to put down.”—Gilly MacMillan, bestselling author of What She Knew

From the Sunday Times bestselling author of Do Not Disturb, an electrifying tale of psychological suspense in which an unsuspecting young woman finds herself trapped in an increasingly sinister web of mystery and lies.

  • CARER/COMPANION WANTED FOR ELDERLY LADY
  • YOUNG FEMALE PREFERRED
  • COMPETITIVE SALARY
  • ROOM AND BOARD INCLUDED

She thought she was safe. So did the others . . .

At loose ends after the devastating death of her mother, Una Richardson responds to an advertisement for a ladies’ companion, a position that leads her into the wealthy, secluded world of Mrs. Elspeth McKenzie.

But Elspeth's home isn’t the comforting haven it seems.

Kathryn, her cold and bitter daughter, resents Una's presence. More disturbing is evidence suggesting two girls lived here before her.

What happened to the young women?

Why won’t the McKenzies talk about them?

What are they hiding?

As the walls begin to close in around her, Una fears she'll end up just like the other girls . . .

Enjoyed! At first I was a little bored… but it didn’t take long to take off. Then kept going with mystery.
Rich older woman hires a companion in a grand house. Once the young companion settles in … she begins questioning peculiar coincidences that are so unsettling she begins to snoop on her own.

Soooo Good!

I love the book when I think I am so clever and guessed everything and then the author proves me wrong. Claire Douglas is a very good writer and Georgia Maguire is one of the best narrators. Definitively worth a credit.

Well written

Firstly, I have never read anything by this author. I kind of stumbled upon this book while searching for something in the mystery genre to listen to.
This was really good! I thought I had it all figured out about halfway through the book ( I thought I was so clever) and boy was I wrong. Five stars!

Truly enjoyed this. Although the ending gets a little messy in my opinion. While most questions were answered in the end, I felt like I was still clinging to certain questions and couldn’t focus on the questions being answered currently but that is probably a me problem- not the authors! Great story line. Definitely kept me intrigued. 100% recommend

Excellent performance, great story line

Initially, there was a surprising development where a character was unexpectedly killed off, though the execution felt disjointed. The revelation of her demise only occurred in the subsequent chapter, contributing to a sense of disorientation.

With numerous characters introduced throughout, the conclusion necessitated a concerted effort to delineate each individual, detracting from the overall experience.

While the narrative was passable, it failed to resonate as a personal favorite, particularly due to the jarring nature of the inserted passages, which seemed disconnected from the main storyline. Regrettably, I cannot endorse this selection to my book club, as it lacked the anticipated shock value. Overall, it left a middling impression.

The plot is well thought out and the narrator is excellent. One of the few murder mysteries I found hard to put down.

Well written, excellent story

I was hooked by the second chapter. Loved the story, the narrator, everything. Never read this author before, but I will for sure be reading her again. I thought I had it figured out so many times, just to be proved wrong over and over. Highly recommend!

Loved every minute!
